trying to find a nice simple solution for eq, compressor, limiter, etc. kind of like waves audiotrack, only free... and universal binary.

does this exist?

Doesnt' live come with a compressor limitor?
voxengo has one, so does n-track

I made up some Device Groups from Live's built-in effects. Simplify it AudioTrack-like by only controlling a handful of parameters.

If you want others, there are always these (I especially like the Multiband Compressor):

Grab the devices together you want, assign MIDI controllers to the parameters you want to control, and you're there!

Low CPU usage, and the price is right!

i've found live's built in compressors are not quite adequate for producing. when i compared them with waves audiotrack they were pwned pretty hard.

the au ones are ok too but i like having something to look at.

i guess i'll just have to suck it up and use them anyway.
