When I first moved to England, I wondered what "range eggs" were. I thought they must be crap, cuz they're free...

It is sad, though. I'd gladly pay more for eggs if I knew the hens were being treated humanely.

i was talking to a farmer about this a few days ago. he was saying free range is not really what you think it is. he is a small dairy farmer, he has a small herd of cattle and a small amount of hens and supplies milk and eggs for locals.

He told me that what free range (or barn eggs) means is that the hens are not caged.
they are kept in a closed barn with no natural light, they are crammed in and the lights are on timers to switch on and off 4 times a day. this confuses the hen into thinking 4 days have passed in 1 day thus providing more eggs. he says the barns are never cleaned and the hens live upon mountains of there own shit. It's definetly better than being stuck in a cage. but the same mistreatment still happens with so called free range hens.

his hens are kept in an outdoor coup with a barn which they are free to come and go from. the only time they are locked in is at night and thats to stop the foxes eating them. he told me that for years he had been supplying the local hotel eggs and milk. but just the other day health and safety had visited the hotel and questioned why the eggs had no stamp on them. the hotel owner explained he was buying local produce and had been for years so thats why they weren't stamped. health and safety insisted that the eggs must have the stamp on them to prove they've been pasteurised. the farmer is a pretty old man. he didn't evenknow you could pasteurise an egg. he said that when you pasteurise milk it is is heated up to a certain temperature then cooled back down. how do you do that to eggs without cooking them?

needless to say he's lost his business to the hotel and the hotel is no longer able to provide good local produce. No one wins, except for the people running the stinking pasteurised egg factories. whether they're caged hens or hens that are crammed 24/7 into a big stinking cesspit, they're not good.

basically if you want your eggs to come from hens that have had a good life then you need to go find some decent local produce. it always tastes better anyway.

organic free range eggs people!!!

Organic meat tastes so much better than the cheap market stuff! Happily pay the extra £5 for good tasting meat.

Are these guys for real?
Our hens are housed in state of the art cage-free barns. Our hens have free run of the barns and also have ample roosting and scratch space available. When conditions are suitable the hens have access to the outdoors. Our hens lay their eggs in nests that resemble small houses with red curtains to give them privacy for layin

Get your own hens. We've got 4 in the back garden. Don't take up much space or upkeep. Feed once a day with some corn and get 4 eggs every day for most of the year which is more than enough for us, our friends and family.

My egg eating conscience is clear.

I get Cage-Free Eggs from Whole Foods. I wonder if they are any better?
