Gateway M305cs laptop

Post by garvey » Sat Feb 21, 2004 3:16 pm

Anyone making Live music with a Gateway laptop?
I'm looking at the attractive price of the M305cs ($899) and thinkin' it might be the one...
Any Gateway horror/success stories?
Thx,

I'd recommend against it. I'm currently typing on an $850 hp laptop that has an amd 2500+ chip in it. If you go to the DUC or digi[design] user conference you'll see people prefer the following chips for laptop use. Intel Pentium M (oft seen in the centrino package), pentium 4 (lousy battery life and occasional denormal problems with some plug ins), and the amd 2500+ which is a barton processor with the 512k cache.

The celeron is a crippled p-4, crippled in the sense that it has some of its cache memory disabled.

Gateway recently purchased emachines...apparently they have been turning out exceptionally cheap but still okay laptops. the M305cs may have been produced before the merger...as emachines has been using amd chips...including the new 64bit athlons.

The chip in the 305cs is a Mobile Pentium 4, so I think chip-wise it's probably OK. I was more concerned about any Gateway service/quality issues.
