Widescreen or not

Post by Jan Holm » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:47 pm

Im going 20" and will be choosing between

1680 X 1050 Wide (1,76 million pixel)
1600 X 1200 Normal (1,92 million pixel)

Reference
1280 X 1024 (1,31 million pixel)

Seeing the numbers like this, it seems logical to
go for the 1600X1200 - but then again theres something
about wide I really like. Will be using it for other stuff.

Wide or not - any experience here ?

Go wide. Lots more real estate for editing. Makes a world of a difference.

I picked up a widescreen laptop a few months ago, I love it, room for tracks, browser and sends, all the bling.

Check one at a store for image quality if that's an issue. Love mine (see sig) but I'm an audio guy, not a visual person.

Lots - only 80 more pixels. Aka 5% more than normal ratio,
and I'll be loosing 150 top/button.

And still I seem to want wide, but the logical side of my brain
is messing with that idea.

Widescreen is more intuitive i think, it seems weird at first but once you get used to it it's hard to go back to 4:3 (or 5:4 at 1280/1024, whatever). If you are worried that 1680x1050 is not big enough then go 1980x1200.

There is no reason to get a 20" monitor these days, unless space is a serious problem.

Get a Dell 24" widescreen. They are cheap as hell. Under $800. Great quality. Better performance specs than any of the Apple LCD panels.
M-Tech D900T laptop, 17" WSXGA+ wide-screen, Intel Pentium 4 3.4 GHz HT (600 series) 2 MB cache, 2048 RAM (Dual Channel DDR2 PC4200 533 MHz), Dual hard drives: 80 gig x 2 = 160 gig SATA 5400 rpm (RAID 0 config)
Korg Zero 8 mixer/soundcard/MIDI

Here in Denmark that Dell is 1200$ and I cant get a nice 20" for
400$

20" seems to fit nice in between my priorities and needs.

Damn. That sucks. I love my country. Seems like everything costs less. Here the price difference between flat panels is so small, it's pointless to really get worried about it.

Oh Jan, go for the highest resolution - always! Wide is cool and all (24" Acer 1920 wide here), but if I could get higher total resolution for the same price I'd do it.

The only valid reasons for widescreens are:
1) Personal preference, and
2) Movies ;)

If you don't care about either of those then go for real estate - the non-wide, imo.

I've got 16080x1050 on both lappy and external monitor. 15.4" on the lappy and 20" on the external. It's all good!
