I've sent an email to tech support about this problem, but I figured it couldn't hurt to get you guys to weigh in as well.
I've been using the version of Live that came with my M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 (Live Lite 4.0.4) for a couple of months now. Up until a few days ago I had no problems with it. However, it has recently started crashing unexplainedly. Sometimes I'll get the Windows error dialog box "this program has encountered a problem and has to close, would you like to send an error report?" but sometimes, the program will simply disappear and its process in Task Manager will shut itself down. I've searched through the forums here, and have come to believe that the culprit is a plugin, namely a plugin I use called EZ Drummer. What puzzles me is that this is not a new plugin that I've just started using. I've been using it since I got Live, and only a day or so ago has it started to cause problems.
As we speak I'm downloading the Live 5 Demo to make sure this isn't just my wimpy Lite version of Live. As I said above, I have emailed Ableton and am waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime I'm stumped (and more than a little peeved...). Any thoughts, or anybody ever have this problem and fix it somehow?
