Live 6 Beta: AAC (m4a) test...

Post by ylarin » Sat Sep 02, 2006 7:00 pm

Hello testers,

Unfortunately I'm not one of you... have not been able to sign on on time... but that's another story.

I'm looking at this thread almost each day and never come into AAC support issues. Did somebody checked that yet ? I'm wondering because I am converting all my cds to AAC since 2 weeks ago when I saw that Live 6 was supporting this format (*.m4a).

Can somebody give me some feedback like: "Don't worry dude, AAC m4a are just working fine as mp3 where in Live 5.2"... or something like that...

Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm in the wrong thread.

Cheers

you can drag aac straight from itunes into live's browser in 6.

i think that there is still a problem with the ones you buy from itunes though.

The drag & drop from iTunes will be useful, thanks for answering "am" ! I've heard the same about itunes store protected format... Is it Live 6 that does not support the protected format, or is it the format itself that does not allow Live to read it ? That is the question... Anyway I do not buy on itunes store and won't because of these protections crap... anyway that is just my opinion and choice ;)

All apps don't handle purchased AAC from iTMS as Apple don't allow other companies to use their DRM. Purchased AAC from iTMS use this DRM - called FairPlay. This is something that will be a very long wait for Ableton.

I'd probably want to capture the part of the purchased audio and then use that in Live rather than the whole purchased track,

Just bought Live 5, came across this thread doing a search for AAC support. Very glad to see that Ableton has implemented this, probably my most wanted feature for V6.

FYI, if you buy stuff from the iTunes store and you want to use it in Live without doing the nasty CD-burn/reimport hack, you can check this little puppy out:

Works a treat on iTunes 7.

No. I've just run a short 12 bar test.

Exported 12 bars of a current mix form live to the desktop.
iTunes - import file - convert to AAC - 128 bitrate

Yes, live does see and will preview the file, as well as place the file into a slot. Timing was off. A 120 bpm loop imported as @159 bpm. Ahem :/

And the file was converted to a .wav and placed into lives temp cache folder.

So yet again true "support" of the format is not included, simply previewing and (seamless, I will grant them that) importing.

Now you know.
Lots of gear. :)

Ok, read what you all have had to say, but its my first post and i wouldnt want to break the tradition of a first time poster not sounding stupid, ill keep up my end of the bargain and ask for it in dumbies terms. :D

I came in to the trouble that it looks like every1 else has come into. I can drag all other files into Ableton but not the "Itunes AAC".

Will there be a fix or support in Ableton live 6 specifically for "Itunes AAc" files? Or is it a case of Itunes using thier DRM and protection to keep the files specifically to Apple products?

I also saw in the "Torq/Connectiv" video that torq plays AAC files. Is this the case again that it will play AAC but not the "Itunes AAC" files?

I tried the HYMN Myfiartunes GUI program and it worked great, still wont play in ableton 5 but as has been talked about it doesnt support AAC yet?
Updated in ableton 6??

Im not to sure on it all.

It doesn't matter if it will play Apples protected AAC files because you don't have the rights to the material in any case.

It's a moot point. [/list]

^^ well it probably would to ableton becuase they would get in big trouble. lol

I guess the question is more, because people have been saying that ableton will play AAC, does abelton have a agreement with Itunes in order for ableton to be able to play the DRM/protected files??

Or as i said is it a case of Ableton and torq also playing the AAC format, M4a, but not the DRM/protected itunes files???

A issue that needs to be defined i think....

I think its suppose to work as long as the file is authorized on the computer. Traktor by NI is able to use DRM files as long as iTunes is installed, and the tunes are authorized for that name coinciding with iTunes.

^^It also depends on what itunes files you are using too. Any thing that has been purchased form Itunes6 and above has the protection as well as the DRM so that is where the compatability issues lie.

With Live 6 you can drag unprotected AAC (.m4a) from iTunes 7 to an audio clip. You can't drag a purchased track (.m4p). I've just confirmed this with beta 18 on PC.

This means that you can't play tracks purchased from the iTMS, but you can play tracks that you've ripped yourself. Of course, you may be able to use one of the methods talked about elsewhere to remove the DRM from the purchased track and turn it into a .m4a.........
All the gear but no idea.
