change 4/4 to 3/4

Post by Vibrations » Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:22 am

Hi
Is it possible to change from 4/4 to 3/4 in the same session.

Thanks

I wish...

Sadly not possible, I was hoping that this would be implemented in Live 6, but it seems not.

I think you can select the 4, type 3 and then hit return on the beat, that might work, but a bit fiddly in a live situation

Which doesn't work if you want to use 1 bar global quantization

And then when you need to go to 3/4?

Is this true? No temp changes possible?

Damn :( There goes my progrock experimentation.

Maybe I can get away for a particular case: 4x 4/4 and 4x 3/4 (which is 12 and can be looped with the global quantization set to bar).

I thought I finally had the one application that I'd use for everything.

You can do tempo changes, but not time signature changes.

It's not so much of a big deal for recording (Machinate's 1/4 solution will work for that, you could make your own click track for Apocolypse in 9/8), but a right royal PITA for Live work...

Would LOVE to see this implemented at some point in Live 6.

I could really use this, too. I'm surprised it hasn't been implemented in 6.

I think the lack of time signature changes is a remnant from Live's early "all music should be 4/4" mentality.

It's kind of embarrassing, really.

Hey, why use several words when only one will do...

Ahem, yeah. Sorry about that. A bit tongue in cheek, of course.

Anyway, there are quite a few benefits to being tight with your triggering. I have a mate who ended up being lethal in 1/16th global q. Imagine doing all these funky little rhythmic displacements while playing, without using the Nudge function. Awesome to have that kind of chops.

Or, imagine having the ability to actually change the time sig...how awesome would that be.

Even if it were a CC on the time sig i'd be happy, just limit the range to what you need. Though this would still be a bit of a limitation for those extra funky changes, surely it would not be that hard to implement.

if you're not stuck on the terms you can do a lot of interesting stuff with meter in live. each individual clip can have a different time signature. clips of one time signature can loop with odd lengths. as a matter of fact, live makes creating unusual meter and polyrhythmic stuff easier than just about anything else out there.

but yes, it's true, you cannot have easy global time signature changes in a traditional way at the moment.
