New York (OT)

Post by brightonalex » Thu Sep 28, 2006 2:55 pm

Sorry to go off-topic, but can any of you that live in NYC recommend good places to go and see?
I've been a few times but want to do something other than just the shops and museums.
We're staying in Harlem, will we be murdered in our bunks?

Thanks
Alex

You mean clubbing or . . .? What did you have in mind?

And where in Harlem? There's shady parts, but these days it's an "up and coming" type of hood. I lived in Spanish Harlem when I first moved here several years ago, nothing to worry about.

There's a really funky German bar in the East Village called Zoom (Zoom is an approximation of its real German name). It's near the corner of East 7th Street and Avenue C. Go there and order a giant beer and soak in the oddness of the place.

Hey, so did I. 130's and Riverside. Wasn't too bad at all.

Interesting things to see? Just go to the East Village and the Lower East Side (LES). You will see plenty of interesting things, um, er, people, and such walking about.

Other than museums? I would go to Chinatown just for the experience (Canal and Broadway and everything east of there. Fun to just walk around Soho as well, just to see the upper crusty people.

Drink some Brooklyn Beer, OK drink lots of Brooklyn Beer. Go see the original Winnie The Pooh & friends at the NYC Public Library across from the MOMA. There's an awesome Japanese bookstore/DVDs right across from the Nintendo World at Rockefeller Center. Forget The Lion King and go see The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, you'll laugh yer butt off. If you're up in Harlem area anyway have breakfast at the Barking Dog, show up really hungry though. Ride the free Statten Island Ferry for the hell of it & a great view of Ms. Liberty.

When I first came to the US in the early 80's I stayed on Ave. A & Tomkins Park. That was a trip!

What about the Warper parties?

http://www.warperparty.com/

laptop jamming, probably alot of ableton-heads there.

My fav part about NYC is all the undercurrent happenings, so many get-togethers, parties, renegades all teeming under the surface. Sometimes there are even (all-night) outdoor renegades in manhatten no less, with thousands of PA watts and a couple hundred people.

Things have changed a lot since then. That area is quite gentile these days. Watching the movie Alphabet City really takes one back.

Yeah, but there's still a fair amount of scraggily people wandering around Tomkins who still think it's 1980.

I have no idea what sorts of things you'd be into so I'll just list the things that I'm into ... hehe. I'd also recommend everything that has already been mentioned in this thread.
