I've bought sampler … not even a tiny little preset?

Post by rodcencko » Sat Sep 30, 2006 11:37 am

I purchased both sampler and Live and I discovered that sampler not has even a simple preset If you want some you have to pay 199 more for the essential collection a really essential collection ………

yeh, same here.

Thought there might have at least been something to play with. Not a cheap sampler after all :(

Guess I should have read the small print.

Its a bit like selling a drum kit without the skins, or a guitar without strings. one or 2 small lightweight sample sets would have been cool

One little tip:

Every simpler preset you have can be used as a sampler preset. Right-click on a simpler.
Now you can add FM and LFO's to the sounds you already have

thanks for the tip hoffman,

Anyway, I am very confused about this simpler/sampler stuff. There is definitely something I am not getting.

IN SIMPLER I have a whole new bunch of presets in the browser. For example simpler>components>atmospheric>aerosol opens an instance of simpler in 'multisample' mode. This is a bit strange for me cause as far as I was aware simpler could only handle 1 sample. This was the reason I wanted sampler. Now, if I right click on the simpler interface I have the following option: 'simpler-sampler'. When I choose this option the simpler instance is converted to a sampler instance and I can see all of the multiple samples and the SAMPLER interface. So there are some free multisamples to play with after all :-)

IN SAMPLER .... there is just NOTHING. When I drag an instance of sampler into a MIDI track, it opens up with just nothing .... zilch, nada, nix. Sheisse. And in the browser, there is also NOTHING.

1. Does anybody know why the multisample presents are with SIMPLER, and not SAMPLER??

2. Is it supposed to be like that???? It doesnt seem logical to put multisample presets with simpler (which was always only capable of playing 1 transposed sample), and have no presets at all with the true multisample instrument SAMPLER :? :?

3. what happened to all of the live 5 SIMPLER presets????? all of the factory content from live 5 for impulse and operator have been succesfully copied over into the live 6 browser .... but not so for simpler. There are no longer any simpler presets (i.e., ones that contain only 1 sample) Where did they go???? I used some of them extensively. :? :?

4. why does SIMPLER now have the ability to go into multisample mode???? What then is the point of buying SAMPLER. Is it like this for everybody? What about the people who haven't bought SAMPLER ... do they have the ability to use SIMPLER in multisample mode? and if so, don't those people who bought SAMPLER feel a little cheated because the free version now has a multisample mode with a whole bunch of free presets and samples, and the people who have paid the price for SAMPLER get a multisampler with no presets :? :?

Anyway, I am very confused about this.

Don't misunderstand me, I am not complaining, I am very very happy with live 6 and just love it.... just somewhat confused.

Perhaps my tiny mind is just overwhelmed and requires some time to catch up

ANYBODY who has thoughts7experiences on this please share them

Thanks

Every serious musician should make his/hers own presets and not raly upon others giving it to them.

but ok.. they could have supplied a few "show off" presets.

If you read my initial Live 6 announcement :), you should see this:
The additional Live 6 packages Impulse, Operator, Sampler & DemoSongs will be available via download within
the next dew days.
So there will be a Content package for the Sampler too, but it is about 120 MB and since the Sampler itself is not an extra download we would have to pack this package into the Live 6 download version.

But I doubt a 200 MB version download would make you happy, beside the fact that other uses would feel bothered if we would include them a 120 MB package for an instrument they do not want.
For the same reason we did not include the Operator package into the normal download.

/Alex

rsagevik - i have to heartly disagree with you, especially for the price you have to pay for Sampler compared to other sampler/synths on the market that comes with loads of presets AND samples for that matter.

not everyone has the time (or need/want) to create their own presets. there's nothing wrong with using ready-made presets just like there's nothing wrong with using loops for drums (i.e Stylus RMX) over trying to program them yourself like in FXpansion GURU. obviously, that's a whole other debate, but at the end of the day...you have to agree...music is music however you make it with whatever tools. i find it hard to believe that every album i listen to has unique presets made by the musicians themselves....that's simply not reality.

on sampler....YES, I think Ableton is really "milking the cow" here as you can buy say..Cakewalk Dimension Pro for like $229.00 from www.bhphoto.com and it comes with 8GB samples and "1500 programs" + once you register, you can download the recent Expansion Pack for free, which includes 120MB more of samples + 350 more programs. I have DPro, so it was a no-brainer that Sampler (& Operator for that matter) are not an option and simply way too over-priced.

I had to read it closely as well, but the new Essential Collection is really made for SIMPLER - NOT SAMPLER! It obviously comes across as being made/comes with Sampler since they're both released at the same time, but from what I read....that doesn't seem to be the case.

Anyway....anyone gunning for Sampler really needs to see what else is available for the price as while both Sampler or Operator DO look nifty, there's LOADS more synths out there that do basically the same thing at a way cheaper price + comes with extra stuff.

This reminds me of auctions where folks get so excited when it comes down to the wire and end up winning an item, only to realize they have "buyer's remorse" after the purchase.

Do your homework people and don't be affected by all the buzz....Live 6 will be around for at least 12 months!!!

Sampler reads SoundFonts. The web is full of free Soundfonts.
Try this : www.soundfonts.it/?a=soundfonts.

If you want you can purchase soundfonts on Sonic Implant website,
this looks very good but they have cheaper ones as well.

i understand but the included library is still stingy compared to your competitors. Your overheads for selling sampler are not high compared to hardware manufacturers so theres no excuse for such a minimal amount of sounds. Would I be right in thinking that as we speak Ableton are developing sound banks which will be for sale at a later date?. I may be cynical but I think thats whats really going on here.
The marketing department are pushing their luck in my honest opinion because the sampler can only be used within Live (Not a VST) which seems to mean the Live users will more than likely be fleeced for every penny ableton can get off them. By the time your users have shelled out for the upcoming sound banks at lets say a 50 euro price tag each that could mean purchasing sampler couold be expensive.

Add Operator and the price of the software it then means Live is the third most expensive daw on the market only beaten ny pro tools hd and saw. Something to think about maybe 8)
