Hi Gerhard!

First you must know I'm a slow thinker too;-) So, despite the fact that I will still have to wait a while for Max/MSP to be on a Win-platform (October - OK that's not too far away), are you telling me I was able to slave Reaktor to Live?
I don't hope you do so (this would make me feel deeply ashamed of my technical abilities). So this still would leave a gap between the nice things I can do with Reaktor and linking it to Live. Or have I really missed something?

Let alone this academical questions: Great news!!!

Sorry, I am wrong! Reaktor is *not* ReWire compatible. My brain seems not to be in good shape today (although I have not been love-parade raving..)

Gerhard,

Thanks as always for taking care of us on the boards, even when we're whining. :) I very much appreciate your dedication to serving the users, and also Ableton's dedication to making sure Live stays a solid, totally well-thought-out product. I for one am happy without MIDI (my hardware has been gathering dust since I got Reason), and if I really do want to use my outboard gear, I'd make loops/hits offline instead of hauling it all to a gig anyway.

I think you guys are totally on the right track with focusing on perfecting your audio first and looking at new features like MIDI later. I'll be very eager to see (well, hear) the new stuff. But speaking of seeing, the one request I'd have is a little more polishing on the user interface. While I appreciate the no-nonsense UI on Live, it looks a little *too* sparse in my book. In the same way that Reason 2's NN-XT has cool, fancy knobs that look like they came off a high-end digital mixer, I'd like to see a little more polish on Live's appearance. Please DO keep the all-on-one-screen motif just like you have it, just snazz it up.

Before I get totally flamed by others, I'll say this: I KNOW that this stuff would make no difference to how it sounds or how the audience reacts to your show. But let's admit it, the "look and feel" of an application makes a difference. Doesn't MacOS X just look so much cooler than OS 9, for example, enough to make it worth the extra CPU? Doesn't Reason feel great to use, in part because of its graphical polish?

Anyway, just my $.02. Overall I'm VERY happy with Live. Keep up the great work, Ableton!

I do agree with you Josh that a graphical interface can make all the difference and that is one of the reasons I like using Live, because its current interface is how it is... It has this fun look and feel to me - the opposite of the coldness and feel of a lot of hardware and worse software trying to emulate the look and feel of cold hardware. Software is software and not hardware and i am a firm believer in software taking its own course. I'm not saying that Live should never move forward in its look and feel (it already has in some minor ways) but hope it continues in the spirit of its own course and making using music software enjoyable...

first off, i have to say i've been using the demo for all of 3 hours. but even so, i have to say i'm EXTREMELY impressed. this is what i want. this is how i'd like to make music. almost!

the name Live doesn't imply audio only to me, it implies a supurb environment for makeing live music on the fly intuitivly. i think the same way of working can be applied to midi with no changes in structure. though everyone would use it differently, here's my specific case:

i have a great outboard 8 channel effect processor, that i was using in no time with live. perfect! bus sends that are routed through audio outs that go to different fx channels on my outboard box, even with midi sync. i have a hammerfall dsp, too, so latency isn't a problem to my ears. wonderful.

the box also has great midi control. it'd be great to be able to setup midi out sliders in live, and automate this as "midi control loops". in my mind, that would fit into the live paradigm the way it is. make some predefined midi control loops, drop them into a midi out track, hit play, and away they go synced and all.

or, some simple midi note loops that work the same way. if i could have a realtime input that is heard (havn't figured out if this is possible in live yet, was able to record, and listen with headphones, but not just playthrough to the main outs.), then i could patch in my nord modular, with it being sequenced the same was as described for the midi controllers above. what a dream.

live is such a good tool/instrument, i think it should be the master of everything. the above would do this to such an extent, i wouldn't need anything else.

that's why i gotta wait till radiaL comes out before i plunk down a chunk of change for live. it seems to have a more interesting set of modulation possibilities and it seems like it might be possible to integrate max midi stuff with it. but, who knows. it's not out yet, is it? and maybe i can't wait that long. plus, i'd probably have to learn max, and that won't be as easy as learning live.

a last word: the interface for live is amazing. wow, there are good graphic designers that find good clients. that's rare for someone to have enough insight to make the design a central concern, and it really does make a difference. live is proof of that.

thanks for listening.

Dear Rpsx,

I understand your wishes. One of the things you desire is actually available in the current version: MIDI control of an outboard fx box. Live is capable of sending controller messages that have been assigned to its mixer and effect control. The idea is that the controller which has been assigned to a specific knob is not only received, but also sent in order to keep an external MIDI controller box with motor faders up to date with the internal state of the program (tracking automation, etc.). You can use this mechansim for your purpose. Just drag in any Live effect and bypass it (since you don't want it in the audio); then, assign the appropriate controller messages to the effect's knobs.

Hi Gerhard.

That brings up an idea that would be easy to impement I would have thought... In the Ableton Plugins section, how about a Null effect that does nothing audio wise, and bypasses audio itself, but has a few rows of knobs\switches and a place for labelling them? This would allow a neat way of integrating control of external MIDI hardware almost instantly from Live?

Regards, Link

Link, we will look into that! Btw, 'abusing' a bypassed Live effect for the purpose of MIDI-controlling outboard gear is not going to cost you any CPU cylces, as bypassed effects (as well as active, but idle effects) are not calculated.

Mr.ableton...we really need MIDI!!!!

And please don´t tell me that we should use Reason or somehting.

1. The reason for not using reason,is the reason of reason.
reason doesn´t supports external reasons or other reasons for my
reasons.
And that´s the reason why I´m not using reason.

ANy reasons??...ahhh any questions??
