OT: Should I update OS X to 10.4.7?

Post by aqua_tek » Mon Oct 02, 2006 10:54 pm

So... my mbp came with 10.4.6, and it works great. So I was wondering if I should make the leap to 10.4.7 (not going for 10.4.8 just yet, since I know it's VERY buggy).

Any advancements in 10.4.7? Any annoying bugs? Logic tells me that if 10.4.6 is working fine for me, I shouldnt even be thinking of updating. But maybe some of you might enlighten me. :)

I generally update as soon as they come to my attention. Ran 4.7 since it came out with no problems, running 4.8 now with no problems.

I always make sure to repair permissions (by booting from the OSX install disk) before and definitely after installing an update - or any major software for that matter.

didn't realize 10.4.8 was buggy - I've had some hiccups but I've been running two or three beta apps so I've attributed it to them.

10.4.8 has caused many people grief, including me.

I had to make backups, and clean install and then install the 10.4.7 "complete" update.....

All's almost back to normal........

i am usually very slow and carefull with any sort of update, once my system works to my benefits, i leave it alone. untill i have a problem or feel a 'real' need for upgrading. stability and troublefree operation oposed to new functions have absolut priority in my book.

i jumped after ages straight from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 no problems at all with Logic 7.2.2, Live 5.2.1, peak 5.2 and those are my 'daily used apps' actually plus recycle and reason, recycle and reason being hardly ever used on my system. and those are the only ones installed on my private / home system.

i do stay away from the logic 7.2.3, live 5.2.2 upgrade after all i hear, i don't have a reason to upgrade them, neither to go to 10.4.8, my system is doing all i expect and runs very stable.

apart from little details no problem with 10.4.8 yet with MBP,
After the update CPU freq. is always at high speed. (a.k.a. full throttle)
I'm getting just a little bit less CPU usage in Live
with this update but more fan noise because of the full throttle.
Update also includes Rosetta performance tweaks.
I took this update more serious than others
and here is my steps for update;
- repair permissions
- clear caches
- boot in safe mode
- install the combo
- restart and repair again...

10.4.8 is a dog, face it.......it's good to face facts.........

repairing permissions and all that isn't going to work IF you already have issues. Certainly has not for the vast majority of people who HAVE had problems.

10.4.7 works (or 10.4.6 or whatever)........keep it. I only did the update a. because until recently, I have had great luck with updates. b. I was already having issues that had nothing to do with osx/mac.

osx 10.4.8
itunes 7 (any version so far)
logicpro 7.2.3.......

AVOID UNLESS ABSOLUTLY NECESSARY...........

I too am having NO problems with 10.4.8 (running on PPC G4). I didn't realise there were 'Issues', what are these exactly??

Can you not just run the 10.4.7 combo update file (which can be downloaded fom Apple site) to downgrade back to 10.4.7, rather than re-install everything?
