How happy are you with m-audio's axiom

Post by cannone » Tue Oct 03, 2006 2:05 pm

Been thinking about getting the M-audio Axiom 49.....anyone want to comment on the ease of use and their experiance with it? Is it worth the $ for a control surface alone (I've got a keystation....and a Trigger finger). It would be nice to have it all in one.....

Thanks,

Cannon

I've heard the Korg MicroKontrol is a bit better integrated with Live. If my laptop is the lone-ranger, I use a Novation X-Station....me loves my X-Station.

I wasn't gonna comment, cause I've only had my Axiom 49 for 4 days, but I'm quite impressed with it so far. Action is great, and I feel like it is a good deal for the price. I'm not that wild about the way the encoders have detents, but that's about my only negative.

I love the axiom... feels great.. fun to play.

My only question is how do you change the behavior of the control knobs. Sometimes they only spin and don't make any changes... sometimes they go up very slowly and down very quickly. but they never just act like a regular knob so far. Anybody have a suggestion on how to fix that?

I did the dump from ableton and have worked with programs 18-20 like they suggest, but i must be doing something wrong...

The endless encoders have aceleration curves which one can set.
From the manual (page 21):
There are three acceleration curves (C1-3) which define the relationship between how fast you turn the endless encoder and the
value increment/decrement that is sent out. It is also possible to turn the acceleration curve OFF so that regardless of how quickly
or slowly you turn the dial, the value will only increment/decrement by 1 per step. Turning the acceleration curve off is useful if you are performing adjustments that require fine tuning.
To turn the acceleration curve off, set the curve to 0. Curve settings 1-3 get progressively more sensitive to movements of the dial.
So, if you are going to be performing a lot of large, fast controller sweeps, you should select acceleration curve 3.
The curve selected by default is 2 which we advise for general use, in performing both large and small sweeps.
To select the acceleration curve:
49- and 61-note versions:
< Press Mute and Program together to access the Accel Curve setting.
< The LCD display will show the currently assigned acceleration curve.
< Use the numeric keypad or the -/+ buttons to select an acceleration curve in the range 0 to 3. The 0 setting will turn the curve off.
Dunno if that will help at all.

They are supposed to be automatically set up to control Pan, but after doing the dump, none of presets 18-20 seem to do that. Am I missing something?

Im glad to read this, as im tempted to purchase the axiom 25 (for portability) if not the oxygen.

Just got the Axiom 25 for $100 new.... ;) Good deal...

Anyways, after having it for a day, I suppose I can report on it a little.

Keys: The keys are as good as or better than my X-Station 49. They actually seem a little smaller in width, so for me they are a little easier to play chords on. Very nice...

Drum Pads: I have heard these are similar to the TriggerFinger, if you have ever messed with one of those. Overall, I'm not really too impressed. For clip launching and such, they're great, but for exact velocity and pure "feel", not so much. But I have always been spoiled on my XL-7...

Rotaries: Not crazy about the "clicky" sound that they give off. I like the encoders on my BCF2000 much more. However, they have acceleration curves, which the Behringer controllers do not (yeah, I know you can do some hex editing on sysex data to get it to work, but come on... ).

Transport: Sweet. Very good feel buttons.

Software: The drivers are pretty much transparent, but now Live 6 has TONS of kewl stuff for the Axiom, like a complete setup lesson and a controller preset. Very nice for use with Live.

Hardware: Very sturdy. Seems as though it will last quite a long time. Large data display. Even without the extra buttons on the 49 and the 61, the keyboard is still easy to setup (you have to use the keys for certain things).

The main reason I purchased this keyboard was to replace my X-Station 49. I wanted something durable and portable with good key action. At least concerning my needs, the Axiom is a good fit. Highly recommended.

had mine for a month or so now. I love it. If your a real keyboard player you will not be impressed by the keys, but if your a half ass sequencer/sampler player its a good mix of features. keys and pads? it took someone long enough to put theese together.

Craigslist of course. Some guy bought it and couldn't return it I guess. I decided not to ask too many questions. 8O

Same guy also has an Axiom 61 for sale for $200 even. I think that one is slightly used tho. Mine was still in shrinkwrap...

Here is the post: http://tucson.craigslist.org/msg/217316824.html Seems like a good guy.

Craigslist is the shiz... :D
