Vista will crack down piraters!

Post by glu » Thu Oct 05, 2006 6:36 pm

ARGGG matey! Vista is out to get you!

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp's upcoming Windows Vista computer operating system will include technology that is designed to prevent pirated copies from fully functioning, the software giant said.

Reduced functionality is already a part of the Windows XP activation process, but Windows Vista will have a reduced functionality mode that is enhanced, Microsoft said on its Web site on Wednesday.

Microsoft said the upcoming releases of Windows Vista and also Windows Server "Longhorn" will be the first two products to ship with the new anti-piracy measures included, but more Microsoft products will eventually adopt the technology.

Windows Vista systems must activate with Microsoft as genuine within 30 days and failure to do so will result in "reduced functionality mode" until successful validation occurs, Microsoft said.

Customers that use genuine versions of Windows Vista will get an enhanced set of features that will not work on non-genuine or unlicensed versions of Vista, it said.

Users of non-genuine Windows Vista software will also be notified by the appearance of a persistent statement in the lower right hand corner of their desktop that reads: "This copy of Windows is not genuine."

A Wall Street analyst said on Wednesday that Microsoft will most likely ship the Windows Vista system on time and meet its deadline for both corporate and retail consumers.

Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund sent a note to clients saying Microsoft may be ready to send the final test version of its much-anticipated Windows upgrade later this week or next week, indicating that Vista will be available for business customers in November and retail PCs by late January.

Windows Vista, five years in the making, has been postponed by Microsoft several times.

Microsoft Windows sits on more than 90 percent of the world's personal computers and the Windows business accounts for about 30 percent of the company's $44 billion in revenue.

Great! The more people have to actually pay for it the more people will consider alternatives.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was cracked before it even hit's the stores.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

I don't see what the big deal is here. You have to pay for Windows! Fuck, did anyone expect no copy protection?

And the length of time something takes to crack has no real relation to how good the program or protection is. Release groups will always find a way, it's how the world works. Live 6 was cracked in about 12 hours of public release.

After trying the RC1 release I was quite pleased with how Vista is shaping up. A lot of very nice features... Plus MS has spent so much time and money getting it together that it absolutely needs to be good, I really doubt they would slip up when it's such a vital product. Besides, both XP and 2000 are very good OSs, so I hope MS has finally learned a lesson.

does anyone know of any software for the average user that was unable to be cracked. I remember hearing that for nuendo 2 or sx 2 ( something like that ) steinberg spent a ridiculous amount of money on the copy protection scheme, and yet it was cracked instantly. whats the point?

SX3 was around 1 year before being 'released'. Apparently this was due to problems with SX3 rather than the copy protection. I doubt there is any popular software that is unable to be cracked, after all it's free advertising. How many people would have known about / tried Ableton if there were no cracked versions? Of many VSTis for that matter.

Companies have gone as far as implementing hardware key dongles to try and prevent pirating, but the dongles are emulated just as easily as the software is cracked. It's a waste of money if you ask me. Anyone who wants a free copy of a piece of software badly enough is going to find a way.

I didn't know it was officially out yet. Steinberg are pretty damn good at this protection stuff - then again is it really any different from Wavelab 5?

Would be the cost effective thing to do actually... do you think that Vista is not going to be pirated before it's even released? Please. There's Microsoft throwing money in the toilet again, oh and of course bogging down your computer with more garbage code.

Oh well. I'm happy with my Mac.
Copy protection is only there to stop the common man sharing all his programs with a CD Burner. Every company knows thet if demand is there it'll be pirated and cracked by release groups. There's also a great deal of legal problems when you release something with no protection. It doesn't bog down you computer either. Almost all protection runs infrequently (once, the first time you start the application) or a specified times. Not continually.

Ohh you have a mac! So cool! Apple want your money just as much as MS do. There's no good guy here, so don't take side.

Man, Windows hating is so passé :-)

Yeah, has a dongle for the first time, one reason I haven't upgraded my copy of Wavelab 5.

Bleh, I hate dongles :-( Wavelab is ok, but it's so similar to Sound Forge i can hardly see a difference
