I'd say this attitude, which seemingly runs through the current US administration, is half-way responsible for nuclear proliferation.

North Korea just threatened launching a nuclear missile at the USA. Don't you watch the news?
I never knew they explicitly threatened to Nuke the US, have you got a link?

I don't have a link. I've had the television on this morning, and they are saying that a North Korean official made a statement. He said that he hopes this can be resolved before North Korea is forced to launch a nuclear missile at the USA.

It's just like gun control laws. With gun control laws, then you prevent the good guys from having guns to protect themselves. The bad guys have cheated and got them anyway.
'Good guys' and 'bad guys'? I suppose that pretty much encapsulates the typical American world view. This isn't Hollywood you know...
subterFUSE wrote: The only reason we didn't see a third World War break out last century was because both sides had nuclear weapons. We were at a stalemate. No one could act, for fear of retaliation. The USA & Russia had missiles pointed at every conceivable strategic target on the other side. As dangerous as this situation sounds on first mention.... it actually was a deterrent to military action.
The Cold War was more poltical hype than anything, do you think if the Soviets were without a nuclear capacity, that the US would have nuked them or vice versa? If this was the case, you think the US would have invaded Russia or again, vice versa?

We have to understand that the 'good guys/bad guys' thing was a purposeful fabrication in order to facilitate winning the assent of the US votership from way back in the late 1940s. Nobody who was educated at the highest levels really believed in this construct, they knew what a vicious and complicated world it is and they knew they needed a populist framework to dumb things down. Similarly, the Soviets needed a capitalist bad guy that they could use as a bogeyman in order to stay on top of the protection racket for their population. This is all laced with sentiments of cultural and national pride, righteousness and idealism, but actions speak louder than sentiments and there is little real 'good guy' altruism involved in those.

There is no upside in countries invading countries in the modern world, but there is upside to appearing as if you could invade another country. There is upside in invading countries in the less-developed world, because you might make it stick, but you need support from one of the modernized factions to do so.

What various factions are doing is to show what they can get away with *globally* in order to maintain control *locally* or *regionally*.

I've seen docus on N Korea, they are the only country where they have their kids sing songs about destroying the USA every morning.

Sanctions probably will never matter, N Korea is poor because the government siphons all the money to defense (a role model for the USA!).

Their 'Patriot act' is that they imprison and torture anyone whom they suspect of disent, along with their EXTENDED family.

Former NK Generals now defected and Living abroad have testified that the family members are murdered, raped, tortured, maimed by chemicals, etc...

You have to ask your self, why was Bush wasting time on Iraq?

If sanctions don't work, what do we do?

I doubt that the US can win a war in every continent.

Would these be US-produced documentaries by any chance?

Ya, I dunno, possibly a good point.

Chances are the NK thing is all posturing and could have been dissolved by a little deeper thought than our current gov't can provide....

Like I said.... the only thing that will work is if their life-blood is cut off. Oil and gas from China. Without that, then they are finished.

The question is.... how do you get China to help? They have been unwilling to do so for years. China benefits from instability in the region. That is why they have not been helping. So how do we change this?

The answer is by giving nukes to Japan. Do that, and suddenly China has a rather vested interest in preventing conflict in the region.

man...is this what they're peddling on FUX news or what ?

you think china will play ball if the yanks arm the japanese ? NKorea tests a nuke and its an 'unnacceptable act of agression' ....so whats arming the japanese with nukes gonna look like, a revival of the hippy movement circa 1960 ?

The whole absolute heinous nastiness aspect aside, except for limited cases the whole nukes thing is idiotic, because you can't seriously blow up anybody upwind. NK is nicely situated in that regard, because all their enemies are downwind.

well, that about says it. Look, the answer is not ours to give.

"L'il Ill" Kim trivia

Post by rasputin » Tue Oct 10, 2006 4:30 pm

Portraying Kim Il Jong as a ridiculous puppet in the Team America movie was pretty brilliant. He seems to regard himself as Auric Goldfinger, but in reality is closer to Dr. Evil.

Some interesting Kim anecdotes:

Apparently, the single biggest customer for Dom Perignon is Pyongyang. Kim has developed a taste for Hennessy VSOP cognac (although I should think he would prefer Remy Martin Louis XIII; I sure do) Also Mercedes Benz automobiles. The companies won't reveal how many millions of dollars worth of product is shipped there, but it's plenty.

He even went so far as to engineer the kidnapping, in 1978, of a South Korean actress, and then her boyfriend, a film director--in order to make films for Kim, who has tens of thousands of movies in his private collection, but favors those featuring the Rambo and James Bond characters.

Would be humourous except for the fact the North Korea is basically a police state where the non-military populace is just subsisting, and now they appear to have nuclear weapons.

There's a huge database on the web of their written propaganda. It's hilarious in a way, and especially if you go back to the similar writing that came out of Moscow pre-1989.
