Ableton 3 VS Motif ES... Please help me guys..

Post by Musikman4Christ » Tue Mar 09, 2004 5:49 pm

Hello guys, im the new kid on the block. I dont own either the Ableton 3 or the Motif ES.. I havent decided what to buy.
Right now, I just built a PC since I bought my Korg Oasys PCI soundcard. Im using Windows 98SE since my soundcard can only take that or ME.
Well guys... the reason I post is because, im the kind of guy that needs big time help when it comes to composing. I need something that jumpstarts my creativity. Once its jumpstarted I take off from there. I also currently own the Korg I30 arranger which helps me make my backing tracks for my songs. But I need something new. I went to guitar center and played the Motif ES and it really sounded nice, but the price is still up there.

After reading all about Ableton, I think I might have found what I need. But I need some more ideas. Do you guys know if Ableton is able to produce Arps like the Motif ES does?
The reason I like the arps was because, the Motif ES was able to recognize the Chords as I played them in realtime. I like that because, thats exactly how I jump start my creativity of a new song.

Is this somehow possible with Ableton? I know I have so many questions, but I really need to learn more before I spend or sell my stuff to buy something new. Thanks for reading my post and God bless you guys..
Warmest Regards,

Musikman

Thanks for your quick response. I really appreciate it ! To be honest with you, I dont even know if im an arp kind of guy.. You see, for sure, I know that im an arranger type keyboard player. In other words, although, I know how to play the keyboard, bass, drums etc etc, I cant translate that into the keyboard. Thats why I bought my Korg i30 arranger. This helps me make my backing tracks etc etc..
I thought that maybe by using Ableton I would be able to put together phrases, or loops together in realtime to helpme make a song quicker. But from what I understand now, it doesnt really come with loops or phrases right? I would have to make them from scratch or use any that I may own already right?

But in a way, then it wont recognize my chord changes in realtime? I hope I made some kind of sense. Thanks so much for your help...

you have a better idea of live now, live is just a sampler, when you purchase Live it does come with some samples to play with but it is not a program that has built in sounds or sequences like reason, or like the motif. it's only a sampler, waiting for whatever you put in it, then you build arrangements of the parts that you have played into it from what ever audio source you are using to compose with, so it would not replace the motif, instead you would record whatever you are playing on the motif
into Live.

what are you using to record your music?, Logic, cubase, sonar, DP???
Live woud replace those.

Guys, My recording pc last night crashed big time. I was recording a song and it locked up. When I rebooted, I ran Norton utilities and used windoctor, then I rebooted again, now windows is saying, that I have a non system disk or something like that. Then, it says that some files that make windows run got corrupted.. Oh well, just when i thought I had everything nice and stable..

But Im going to reformatt. 8O

Right now, im using Cubase VST32 5.1r1, on Windows 98SE, XP2600+, 512 mgs PC3200 ram.. Two Hard disks 120 gig each... This I built from the cash of selling my Korg Trinity.. Oh, and I have a Korg Oasys PCI soundcard which onlly works in Windows 98SE or ME...

Thanks for clearing up all the awsome features of ableton.. I can see that its really designed for ease of workflow.....So in a sense, yes, by having the Motif ES and its arps, I can basically use it to record all the parts of a song that I would want then, with Ableton, put them together while theyre playing in realtime... This sounds like a really nice idea...
