recording Logic audio instrument live in Ableton?

Hi, I'm using Logic Pro 6 and trying out a demo of Ableton 3 as I've heard it's very good.

I can record audio fine, but what I would really like to do is use the audio from one of the instruments in Logic e.g. EVP88 and record that live in Ableton. I've been playing around with it for a couple of days, but don't really seem to be getting anywhere. Is this possible, or am I missing something really obvious here?
Any ideas? Thanks for any help on this.

well you're not going to get anywhere if you are trying to do it with ReWire. what you need to do is send the physical audio signal from Logic OUT of your machine and then back into a physical input and into Live. if only some developers would start exploiting Core Audio for all it's worth we would be able to freely route audio from app to app with no wires, or ReWires for that matter.

I've managed to get Logic -> Live using Soundflower before. I don't think there's any special trick to it. The biggest problem is that when Soundflower is your Live "In" Source, you can't read from your A/D converter unless you use another app to put that signal on the soundflower bus somehow or another.

I had a little try with it yesterday but didn't get that far. Probably just need to spend a bit more time with it to get it working properly. It'll probably do the trick (I'm hoping), though I was thinking the solution to this might be a bit 'simpler'with Core Audio doing all the hard work for me.

Ok, here's the latest:

Tried the jackosx and everything makes it look like it should work, I can get it as an input in Live etc but I just don't seem to be able to record any audio nor actually get any signal in Live. I can hear it fine, though. Probably doing something wrong, but not sure what right now.

I'll try this soundflower next , so I'll let you know about that too.

I Would like to use Live as master and play the vsti (EXS24 EVB88 ...)of logic in Live
Why Rewire is not good for that?(I tried but I have no result)
somebody has an answer?

Ok, I tried soundflower and have actually got it to do just what I wanted - woo hoo! Seems to work quite well- nearly fell off my seat when I got a signal in Live.

So this is the summary of how it works in my set-up : start Live first (so it's not running as a slave and you can set audio prefs) then start Logic. In audio prefs in Live choose soundflower, do the same in audio drivers prefs in Logic. In Live set the input to 'live in' (of course) and you should be away quite nicely.

Now I can get down to the business of actually making some music. Phew!

I use a Mixtreme card and the routing of the INCREDIBLY flexible Soundscape mixer allows such feats as this extremely easy. Routing output of any other apps (or even insrts/sends of tracks from Logic) back into Live is a breeze.

By the way, new Mixtreme hardware is about to be released that absolutely pisses on Lynx/etc's fire. Spinaudio are also releasing Roomverb to complement the other fabulous fx available to run on the onboard DSP.

If you're on PC seriously take the time to check this stuff out, it is absolutely second to NONE and that includes RME. The Acuma Sta Fat plug is killer for guitarists wanting a decent soft amp modeller more uip to the mark than things such as Ampltube and the like and the Drawmer compressers are truly killer. Zero latency of monitored live material from a company that really knows its' stuff...

Thanx for this tip on the Mixtreme ... I always had been looking at the Creamware Luna [ for this pricerange] , as I wanted an audiocard with it's own dsp mixer and efx facilities . I totally wasn't aware of this ... and saying the company is approx. 20 minutes from my doorstep ... .

The Creamware range though looks more axed on synthesis [which is overkill for me ] , though the SCOPE platform looks very fine .

But with its established pedigree of Soundscape pro-audio this might be a serious candidate for my next DAW audiocard ...

MBazzy, you won't be dissapointed. I'm sitting here praying that the addition of a Mixtreme 192 will allow my existing plugins to run on both cards for more DSP power (that's how it works with the "old" Mixtreme). The TC Dynamizer, Aphex, Acuma and Drawmer plugs are absolutely top notch. The Drawmer compressors I have found nothing to match in the software world personally and have been worth their weight in gold.

The monitoring of the onboard effects is ZERO latency and the support and drivers has always been absolutely the best I have ever encountered in audioland over the years. This kit was doing sub 3ms stable way before RME Lynx etc.The 128 channel user configurable mixer kills anything else around when you need routing flexibility between apps and external hardware and integrates beautifully with the onboard fx/drivers. I permanantly leave a multiband EQ on all output channels as they just sound so good to my ears.

The great bit is that you get to choose what converters to use, in my case I use a digidesk, and can upgrade later if need be without ditching the card itself. Seriously underestimated kit, the full Soundscape DAW systems host PC can crash and it will STILL keep recording without a glitch. Try THAT on a PT based system!!!

These guys deserve some word around the net IMO especially since Mackie completely screwed up the marketing of the range when they bought Soundscape out a few years back. Not sure what is in the beer over there but these people seriously know what they are about when it comes too good hardware and audio.

I was really flabbergasted that this actually was a Belgian product ... damned ... we really underestimate ourselves I guess LOL .. this is the same for some of the most underrated monitors in the biznizz where noone talks about : the Peak 6 by Far .. also Belgian .... on par with the Mackie HR824 for half the price ! Have a friend who has them and they are just superb he says.

The mixtreme exactly does what I need and focused onthat : a dsp based mixing environment with all the goodies of a traditional soundcard ...

I hope the new Mixtreme will remain in the same price range ... and their breakoutbox doesn't break the bank either [ comparing with the Creamware one ... ]
