Sound fonts in 6

I've already used Live4 & 5. I've tried a variety of free sound font vstis, but never found one I'm totally happy with. So I was very interested to read about the new Sampler in 6.

I just installed the Live 6 demo. Having never really got to grips with 5, 6 was a bit of a shock. I really hadn't got a clue how to handle all the new stuff, and the lessons didn't really help.

Anyway, I dived in and dropped a few sound fonts into Sampler. Eurgh. Half of them didn't sound right at all. So I started pressing buttons like a numpty. Bloody hell, there's a lot of buttons, and none of them seemed to help. Is there some sort of polyphony/legato control on it?

I got into Live 3 because it was so easy to operate, and now it's starting to look like any other DAW, where you need some sort of nightschool course before loading it up.

I was already to spend my money. But that idea's on hold now.

Sorry, that wasn't a very helpful post. I suppose I'm just disappointed. I suppose I should either read the manual, or stick with 5.

The sampler issue has nothing to do with going back to a previous version.
You can still do the same things in Live 6.

The problem with some of the imported SF2 files, is that the volume is set lower.
Just turn up the global volume and/or velocity settings and you should be fine.

If that doesn't make the SF2 sound like it should, then it must be an importing bug.

For me, the main reason for buying 6 would be to use the Sampler. Of course, some of the other new features appeal too.

However, if the Sampler doesn't play my many sound fonts properly, then I don't want it, and I don't need 6 to use it.

The problems I have seen with various sound fonts are varied. Low volumes I can deal with. But the rendering of some of the sounds is just way off what I'm used to. I know that sound font players are all different, and some interpret things differently to others, but I use three freebies at the moment, and they all seem to do a better job than the Sampler demo.

I'm guessing that the importing feature needs a bit more work on it. Maybe I'll keep trying the demos, as the new versions come out.

Just for the record. When you buy live 6, you don't get sampler. It's an additional instrument.

So Live 6 has nothing to do with the way that sampler imports files..
You can layer up your SF freebie players though. Thats much fun

I know they are sold separately. What I'm trying to say (despite my hangover) is that I have to buy 6, if I want to use the Sampler, or did I get that wrong?

So, if I want the Sampler, I also have to buy an upgrade from 5 to 6. That's a lot of cash for something which doesn't work as well as my freebies!

I take your point about it not being a problem with Live 6. I've just got it all lumped together in my addled brain.
