the kick drum in the simpsons theme

Post by Johnisfaster » Fri Oct 13, 2006 8:17 am

anyone ever notice the kick drum in the simpsons theme song? it's freaking terrible and now everytime I hear the song all I can hear is this horrible sounding kick that has no rhythm.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Well, i didn't have a good segway. And it wasn't worth another thread. So i hijacked yours
Tiesto and reebok are teaming up to make DJ shoe's

And to get back on topic...
The simpsons theme song could have been worse.
We've had to listen to it for about 18 years.
If it sucked that much, it would have been redone.

oh don't get me wrong I actually really dig the theme song, try listening to southparks or aqua teens theme over and over and you'll get annoyed pretty fast. but the kick drum in simpsons theme, listen to it closely.. it doesn't even seem like they are playing it in time here and there.

Yeah, but thats my point of it being an orchestra.
It's not a sequenced theme song.. It's an actual score..
They can play drums whenever they feel like it.
Though i'll admit, it sounds like it's playing to a different tune.

no I was serious, put on some headphones and listen to the theme you'll notice this kick sound randomly coming in that sounds like it doesn't belong there.

nah I can't find it either, though I found some great live sonic youth on youtube, tons of stuff on there.

I think we need to sacrifice something to youtube soon to show our gratitude or something. maybe a chicken.... or a virgin.

This was compsed by Danny Elfman who pretty much did most of Tim Burtons movies and tons of other stuff. It is a pretty quirky theme song. Kinda funny that the first part he is starting with tri-tones. The old devils note. Anyways the point is that the kick drum is not random. It is written for classical orchestra. Many classical pieces can seem confusing but if you dig deep enough you can find the reason for it's placement. It has its purpose. We just need to find it. :) Understanding these seemingly crazy placements in classical music can help you to break out of the humdrum 4 on the floor that we get so used to in todays music. Especially Rock, metal, and electronica.

On a side note, I just happen to flip the channels about a week ago and the Simpsons was playing and I heard the bass drum. I had never noticed it before but I was instantly trying to find some pattern to it. Now I am going nuts and will go find the score for this piece and dissect it.

well, those guys just got $1.65b for YouTube from Google, so I'm thinking they got their dues....maybe YouTube was it's own sacrifice? I hope not...
