Apple iMac 20'' Processor and Graphic

Post by djWP » Wed Oct 11, 2006 5:05 pm

Hello,

- is 2.16GHz enough for Live 6 or better 2.33GHz?
- ATI Radeon X1600: is 128MB enough for Live 6 or better 256MB?

Thank you
Werner

Both of those are WAY more than enough.

The 2.ghz Core 2 Duo 17" iMac with 2 gig of ram and the ATi X1600 is easily more than enough also.

I did a little check in Australia's Apple Store even with an Apple installed 2 gig of ram + AppleCare the 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo 17" ATi X1600 iMac clocks in at under $2500 dollars with wireless keyboard and mighty mouse upgrades + modem.

Which is dirt cheap by Oz standards for that sort of rig IMHO.
I just need to rob a bank as being on a disability pension sucks.
Still saving for Live 6 + Operator + Sampler at the moment (won't have the upgrade money till January-Feb at best.

And I don't have dual core notebook :(.
The iMac would definately be my next computer purchase and a switch from PC if I had the cash.
Even though Kubik won't work on OSX I'd still have Reason 3 + Dimension Pro (both Universal Binary) could add Crystal and Automat and be more than happy with that as a composing rig.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

For which application do I need the 256 MB for the ATI X1600?
Or better buy it with 256 MB if MAC OX X 10.5 needs it?

the other thing i would like to know is...
Is it possible to order an imac with a faster hard drive? or is the standard one good enough for big projects? Would it be faster than the drive on my G4 powerbook?
cheers

I've just ordered the 24" 2.16 ghz with the 256mb GDDR3 SDRAM. 250 GB HDD internal.
I couldn't justify the $400aud for the slightly faster processor so I upped the Ram to 2gb. Also it has a FW 800 port which for which I'm about to by an external drive for my samples ect.
I highly recommend getting the graphics card upgrade as its pretty cheap and nearly impossible to upgrade later.
I cannot fucking believe that they have not added a FW 800 port to ALL their models (laptops and IMAC) as its their protocol and WFT? Why not? It shits me. They do so much right and then piss people off like that....
Also the screen so SOOOO much better than the other models and the thing is fucking huge. I cant wait to run logic and live in rewire on the same screen. And you can add another 24" monitor as well, for which you'd definently be glad you got the better graphics card.
I havent actually recieved mine as yet but as I was walking past a closed apple store in the city... there it was.... as i said HUGE. The guy at the audio store I bought my stuff from said he ordered one for his wife and when he bought it home she made him send it back because it was to big.
So stick with the internal 250gb and invest in a good external firewire drive and dont put 3gb as its too epensive right now.

And by the way, when they came out they said 3gb was the most that could be put in their. This is plain wrong. It is a 64 bit proccessor and and such can address more than 4gb. Its just that the 2gb sticks are way overpriced but when they cool down you'll be able to put them in their, no probs.
When I get it i'll post the results because I haven't read any info here on the core duo2 (merom) systems at all and I'm really interested myself.
Hey I'm a pretty fast typer!!

does the 20inch have fire wire 800? I dont use firewire, cos i have an mbox 2 and its usb 2, but in the future id like to have somthing like a motu aswell.
Im thinking im gunna go for the 20 inch with 2 gigs of ram.... ill never want to run a second screen so should i bother with the graphics upgrade?
I wouldnt imagine it would affect the performance of live or protools, but i do like gaming, and this machine should be able to run some good uns...

The 20inch does not have Firewire800, only Firewire400. So my question is, if
an external hard disk could be a problem if connecting it with FW400; I mean
is the speed with FW400 enough?
For the graphics I do not understand for what 256MB are good? Only for games? Or is it better also for other things.

FW 400 is fine for audio / video, the 800 version is faster but i think you would only really benefit if you work on projects with loads of audio tracks. i believe firewire (400) was initially designed for video / audio editing.

the extra 256mb on the graphics card is probably more useful for games or graphics work. it might give you a slight increase in cpu in live, but this would most likely be for things like video support and screen refresh. it wont boost audio performance in the same way as cpu / ram / HD speed does.

i upgraded from a powerbook 867mhz to a MBP 2.16ghz and the difference is staggering - i havent had a great deal of time to play with live 6 recently, but so far i have not even got near the 50% cpu mark!

Thank you for your tips. Perhaps you can give me some further infos.

- So better buy the 20'' iMac with the internal 250GB hard disk and use an external FW400 hard disk. Or buy the 20'' iMac with the internal 500 GB hard disk. I ask this because the internal hard disk is Serial ATA which I think is faster then FW400.
On the other hand I heard that is better to use a seperate hard disk for audio/video. Or is this not important for the Mac. I ask this because I was a windows user in the past and now I switch to the Mac.
Do you know if the 500 GB hard disk makes more noise than the 250 GB?

- For the graphics the ATI Radeon X1600 with 256MB is 80 EUR more expensive than the 128MB. So this would not be a big problem. The only thing that I am not sure is if the 256MB makes more noise than the 128MB. Or doesn't this make a difference. Is the X1600 passive cooled?

I know this are a lot of question, but perhaps you can help me.

i believe SATA is faster than firewire 400 - but i dont have any tech specs to go on...
but personally i prefer to keep my audio stuff on another drive, for back up purposes and for defrag concerns. altho i have read somewhere that apparently tiger does it's own defragging...

no idea which drive makes more noise, but i have a 100gb SATA 7200rpm and its very quiet (on a laptop). not sure how different this is on the larger disks for desktops.

no idea which graphics card makes more noise... didnt realise graphics cards were particularly noisy!

i think you would be best advised by the manufacturer of the relevant hardware.
apple might be of some help, but generally you will get some sales person on the phone. not sure their advice would be very accurate!
