Operator - Course Setting to Zero (how?)
Check out the Covert Operator patches. I love using this trick. You'll find it being used in most categories of sounds.
I'll give some examples from the "Bass" folder: Analogic 01-04, Chopper Dave, Sawdust 01-02, Squares,....
All of these presets have one thing in common: They all have at least 1 oscillator that is "fixed" and has multi set to 0.001...
If you play with the frequency of that oscillator, you can get some cool subtle movements in your sound.
In case you haven't already installed our patches, you can find them here: http://www.thecovertoperators.org/archives/27
These will work with Live 5 and Live 6.
Cheers

thanks for the info, but i already have them! great pack of presets, BTW.
but it seems i am now getting confused by the whole waveshaping terminology...
the patches you mentioned have the multi param set to 0.001, which means the osc still oscillates at a frequency - which to me still means FM.
the way i have been experimenting with "waveshaping" is by setting the multi param to 0. then using osc B (routed into A in the algo section) on a sine waveform with the pitch set to track the keyboard input (not fixed).
so osc B is a sine (with one partial) and A is a square (lots of partials). the resulting sound is a square-ish timbre, despite the fact that my square osc (A) is locked at 0 Hz.
to me, that is waveshaping because you are not modulating the frequency of another oscillator. instead you are using another oscillator as a lookup table (in this case osc A).
am i making sense, or am i confused???

I guess Robert will pop up any moment now to set us straight.
Though you are correct in what you're saying, the thing I'm doing also shapes the wave. It may be FM, but it is still shaping a wave
Here's an old post from Robert on the subject http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 501#129501

cheers, that helps to clarify the confusion.
well if robert is around, he migh also explain how the tone parameter works when doing just waveshaping!
again, my understanding is that in FM this tone control makes the timbre brighter by increasing the range of the FM. but in terms of WS (waveshaping) this should not really have any effect? yet it does, like a lowpass filter...
hmmm <still kinda confused>
cheers. j

I think the question was about the operator tutorial on bass sounds, pt. 3. Here it shows a picture of a non-fixed oscillator with the coarse tuning set to 0, instead of 0.5, and also tells you to set it to 0. From the context also I'm pretty sure this tutorial does not want a fixed oscillator. Either way, the tutorial does seem to be wrongAmaury wrote:Hi,Machinate wrote:hit "fixed" and set the ratio to 0.0.
To be exact, clicking "fixed" is correct, but it is the Multiplier that must be set to 0.
0 multiplied by anything = 0
That the way to achieve waveshaping in Operator.
Kind regards,
Amaury
Thats because the tutorial needs to be updated. The minimum of 0.5 used to be 0 when operator was first released. But the actual behaviour of the parameter is still the same.tylenol wrote:I think the question was about the operator tutorial on bass sounds, pt. 3. Tried that, when you press enter it goes back to 0.5...
Sounds like operator has been modified but not the tutorials as suggested by previous posters.
9 out of 10 Live tutorials are outdated when they release a new version.
The tutorial in question was made for Live 4.1 and has been outdated since Live 5.
Check the Covert Operators site. Andreas just wrote an article about this waveshaping thing with some examples.
