2 Bass Sequencing Tutorials

Post by mattsonic » Sun Oct 15, 2006 5:43 am

Here are two tutorials that will improve your bass composition skills. The first analyzes Daft Punk's Around The World to demonstrate 6 fundamental concepts. The second tutorial teaches you how to use vibrato for more interesting synthesizer sounds. Examples from Daft Punk, Jamiroquai, and Grandmaster Flash are provided.

Fantastic! :D -> But there's something wrong with the link "click here to download a MIDI file of Around The World's bassline". Link doesn't work.

Thanx, Matt Sonic

I checked the link.

Just wanted to point out that the method described here
http://sonictransfer.com/mixing-ableton ... ugin.shtml

. Distortion effects wouldnt never be an Aux return effect its an insert effect but this implies there are disadvantages using effect return channels when the opposite is true. Return channel effects should always be completely wet and its the norm to use reverb and delay on aux returns not distortion.

I've just started using Distortion effectsin an Aux return effect for a few tracks. You can get some very unique subtle sounds and FX that you cannot get by using it as in insert.

Why shouldn't you use a distortion as a send? That is exactly equivalent to adjusting the dry/wet mix on a dist plug. It alos allows you to eg. EQ/filter the distorted sound without effecting the original that you are layering it with.

Numpties I can think of a gazillion better ways to add distortion rather than through and aux send. The only way I would ever use it on an Aux is if I had the channels pre fade otherwise its a pile of crap because your distortion is highly affected by the level of your signal so if you have multiple sounds being sent through your aux sends it will affect the sound of your distortion.

Over the past few years every fucker out there has become an engineer and the reality is that good engineers are few and far between. you think cause you have a daw and a few plugs your suddenly an engineer, BULLSHIT BABY!. And this quote thats so common
There are no rules
Well yes and no its a fine quote for amateurs to use on forums but talk to any engineer who uses lots of distortion you will find in every case they wont strap a distortion on an aux return. there are much better ways to use distortion. This sounds like the beginner who puts a compressor on the aux return. Oh sure there are no rules and Im sure some toddy got a great result with added phase for good measure.

I can imagine Butch vig recording his guitars clean and strapping his footpedlas on an aux return channel
