You probably will never get an OK from Ableton, but they really don't care, just release it and drop the drama
10 New Ableton Live Skins
This is a case of you know you won't get busted, but Ableton will get griped out by their attorney if they say "ok" because someone down the road could *possibly* reverse engineer the whole program and say that Ableton can't stop it by legally *possibly* citing Ableton oking people modifying skins.

GO VEGAN!!! - Macbook Air, Bass Station II, Some Korg shit, Live Suite, U-He, Audio Damage, Microtonic, Ohmicide, more soft stuffs, awesome controllers, euro rack modular synth,an awesome cat.
Yeah just release it. Ableton already know of your program & haven't commented on it... So worst case scenario would be a "Cease and desist" order. But I doubt it would even come to that... look at all those user programs for Reason & ReBirth that existed. They improved the product & if anything improved the scalabilty of them. Release it!
question to Mattsonic
Mattsonic, U rule.
I really dig your Black & White skin; in Sampler tho, only the letters in the first tab are readable / not black. Any chance of fixing this....?
Thanx!!!!!

Re: 10 New Ableton Live Skins
You're in a fortunate position actually. I don't think releasing the editor is illegal. Making use of the editor, as an end user though, might be illegal. Kinda like "here's the software, and I have no control over what you do with it." Much like a bit torrent client, which isn't illegal, but often used for illegal purposes by the user. I doubt Ableton would hunt you down. Actually, if they're smart, they'll save themselves some time and money and offer to buy the code base from you. That makes much more sense. Really great work though (especially making it cross platform). I hope Ableton does the right (or wise) thing.

Or at least, you almost could have. Shortly before finishing it, I came across this post on the Ableton Live forums. It explains that a skin editor violates the Ableton Live End User License Agreement (EULA). In other words, if I release this handy software to world I could go to jail. Since I greatly admire Live and its programmers, and I don’t like jail, this software cannot be released unless Ableton says it is OK. (BTW, if anyone at Ableton is reading this, feel free to drop me a line at [email protected])
The next best thing I can do is try to supply you with as many different skins as possible. Click here to visit the SonicTransfer Ableton Skin Library. So far, there are 10 brand new skins for you to try out. If you have any skin ideas, click here to visit the SonicTransfer Forums.
Lastly, even though you can’t currently download the editor, you can still check it out. Click here to watch a video that shows off some of the basic features of the software.
Hi all!
As I've come to expect, there has been no word from Ableton. I'm thinking about calling their office in Europe. But, at the same time I have to assume that they know about the editor by now...
bizack - I don't really want to sell the editor. I would just like to release it for free.
vip32 - the issue with the pianoroll names has been brought up by others too. I'll fix it asap.
Friedrich - I'm not sure which part you are referring to. Could you take a screenshot?
LiveXXX - All the skins are reported to work in Live 6.
kooki415 - I'll take a stab at it. As always, photoshopped suggestions are greatly appreciated
Kodama - I'm not certain that it is technically illegal to reverse engineer the software anyway. I'm choosing not to release the editor because I respect Ableton and I don't want to go to court (even if I might win). Sorry 'bout the drama though
earsmack - I agree, it is illogical. As for adjusting the colors via the preferences menu, I think you're right. That would solve the whole problem.
kechambe - For me, one of the main issues is about respecting Ableton's IP.
Thanks again for the feedback and suggestions. The Ableton forum community has been incredibly friendly and helpful. Also, there's some new skins in the library too.
Happy Producing!
