Problem with Warping

Post by sturgo » Sun Oct 15, 2006 10:21 am

Hi. I've a problem with Live that's drivimg me crazy. I'm using it for DJing and every time I import an MP3 Live gets the BPM wrong by about 10 or 15. Also when I turn the Warp function off the track sounds way faster that the original.

As you can see from the image, Ableton thinks The Rolling Stones "Lets spend the night together" is 135BPM. It should be more like 120BPM.

Any suggestions?

Tnanx.

i think you need to read up on your manuel a bit mate,
also if you do plenty of searches you will find various ways of warping/tutorials.
also presuming your track aint cut to a perfect length as a their willl be silence at beginning and end, so 1 you will have to ajust these, and then check the others - i choose to warp mine from the first downbeat as if cueing with traditional dj formats but you can take it from the first beat and also work back from these point to add beat less intro.
allthough i find mp3 problamatic they always offset with no reason i find if converted to wav they dont - strange but true and i have quicktime installed.
after months and months of warping for hours and days on end to keep loosing them i opted for the only deffinate way.

i have opted to cut all my tracks 17 - 34 - etc into 16 bar segments and use follow action 16 - next clip - you cant go wrong if this is done wright

warp the track at these marks - then record to the production view rembering you only have to record a few seconds then you can drag the file to full length and it will be perfectly timed, then split each section turn of fade in the clip box, and consoldate each section they can then all be highlighted and dragged back to session view in one go, just add follow action.

if done this way it should be okay to convert the now wav file becuase of the ableton recording proscess back to mp3 if you wish,
also save all clips to a location each track in its own named file and in a record box storage file if you like.

once this is done you can save all your tracks as ableton files in another location for quick acsess and if anything goes wrong you always have the record box storage to get the tracks from again.

maybe this aint the right way and takes some time to do - but after a long time i find the perfect and best way and their is some neat trickery to be had .

ps the stones tracks use the old tape delay effect so this willl make it hard to calculate tempo.

still beware though as personally i think their are bugs in the mp3 downloads as i still get weird goings on and things off setting that in theory and practice seem impossible untill these unexplainable things happen.
tried myself asking many poeple in vain
i know this becuase i have :
copied records to wave and my sets are still going strong.

the way i mentioned in theory should be mint, but this eve i have opened my sets and their is the impossible few milseconds of silence at the beginning off each track section which was cut to pefect 16 bar sections, so indeed the impossible - deffo all food for thought -
check out the way i said and all the tutorials online via searches and hopefully you will sucseed
as long as the impossible does not happen as it does for me over and over and over and over.

good luck

Have you ever considered ditching your XP setup & going for mac instead? I switched over a few years ago & 99% of those pain in the arse unexplainable problems have dissappeared. I now DJ with a G4 powerbook & a Korg Microcontrol. XP was just way too buggy.

Checked out your tunes. Well good man! What kind of mixer is that hooked up to your laptop?

never really fancied going over to a mac just one off those things,
if i could explain the problems i had or at least undestand about them and and i new xp was the problem then it would have to be considered.

that mix was only basic i done on the behringer bcd 2000, just getting my feet around the warping, and that mix opened for so long then the warping all offset as usual , a bit weird how it goes from beat pefect warping to what i end up with so suppose again today i have to start over and try and get my tracks untimatly split into 16 bar segments - as i have two new mixes overdue and these i was suppose to add the ableton trickery as suppose to my first beat basic one.

i advice you go for the fader fox modules i have a lv2 a lx2 and the dj2
they are the bizz.
i can trigger multiple clips with one button on the lx2,
and control deck A and deck B with my dj2,
then i have my lv2 controlling my other decks x 6 which i use to copy my tracks again a second A & B and add varaiation in the clips or change the order of the songs, i add effects to these channels so i can cut in a bit like a wet and dry signal or i can choose to cut between the two channels with effects.
then the next two i set up some follow action trickery, in little groups to trigger where i like.
faders 5 & 6 my impulse and simpler or operator.
then in theory i will set up a extra channel for one shots and miscallanious loops intro accapellas and one for storing simpler samples to drop into simpler etc.

hope this shows you what could be, its up to the individual to how they lay out their ableton template i opted for a more dj freindly approach as suppose to the fader fox templates included.
