- The well being of people who have to work in the meat industry

How so?

- The enormous amount of shit, hundreds of thousands of fucking gallons of shit going into our water supplies and water tables.

What? Vegans don't shit?

- The chemicals - all of us have chemicals in our blood that are left over remnants of the meat industries' waste.

Absurd.

- The fact that the world cannot live the way the US does if we still want a planet.

US mass produces food in general. Irrelevant.

- The fact that you based your experience with vegetarianism off of eating only vegetable based food for 7 days, how scientific!

I've eaten vegetables long enough to know how I feel on only them.

- The fact that you found a very tiny fraction of the meat industries' many disgusting products that you will eat.

Chicken and cow. Not my fault they are industry standard. Perhaps it's attributed to them being the most overpopulated and easily maintained animals.....

I don't generally agree with the idea behind ASBOs but in your case I think I could make an exception. Twat.

you're probably right, I'd have taken it to the next level with your sorry ass by now. Where I'm from we call it "taking it to the streets", or "taking it outside". Of course I'm sure you wouldn't have the balls to say half of the shit you're typing anyways.

You suck donkey balls Frankie, really. You are the type of person that makes this world a shitty place to live in, and you're proud of it too.

I wish i could continue this debate face to face with some of you pricks. I guess I'll just have to go for a run instead to vent my frustration.

why is it that I'm fanatical because I am going against the 'norm", but these guys aren't???

Because you are coinditioned to think that something is ACCEPTABLE, like eating meat.....and something is "out-of-the-ordinary"....like thinking for one's self and going against what they were taught and how they were raised.....especially in our society.

you think you are a forward, "revolutionary" thinker, DATASPORE, that you are on your way to enlightenment......but you are just another clone, albeit a little more intelligent than most.....

It's funny that you spent an entire post talking about how unique you are. It really says a lot about you.

Vegan

Post by billyhulting » Sun Oct 15, 2006 7:18 pm

Hey,

I've been a vegan for 13 years now. I don't think it's hard at all anymore and I am on the road touring a lot. I made a slow transition because years ago there wasn't that much information out there. Best thing I ever did for myself.

I also race inline marathons and even with a very active lifestyle still think it's the only way to go.

All the issues have been brought up here already in this forum in many different so I hope you are able to glean the good infomation out of it all.

I would recommend any of the books by John Robbins and The China Study. There is also a lot of great infomation at vegsource.com.

Where do you live? I've been everywhere and may be able to help you find either restaurants where you can meet people or I may already have friends there.

A classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Only you're not talking to the kettle.

So, anyway... back to the original post:

hey missjade!

I'm vegan. Here's my story and a quick reference to some of the things I've discovered thus far:

For all the meat-eaters, jackasses, fuck-nuts, and haters out there: You can't freak me out with photos of a cheese burger, I'm not a "save the animals" or even a "save the planet" kind of guy. Quite the opposite actually; I'd like nothing more than to see the complete destruction of our planet and the end of all life as we know it. But, you know, like in the nicest way possible.

I grew up in the Midwestern area of the United States. My grandfather had a rather large ranch. I've helped slaughtered hundreds of chickens, and then eaten one of them a few hours later. (and that's not before first taking their eggs early in the morning.) There's nothing more satisfying that killing a chicken and then wrapping its unborn young around it with a mix of red peppers, green peppers, and some onions. Yeah, a nice omelet before slaughtering the rest of the flock as an afternoon chore...

Anyway, I digress.

(My point is that I think that humans belong at the top of the food chain. I'm all for it.)

I think that it's important for a vegan to realize that if you were "out in the wild" you'd likely die if you attempted to live on nothing but the vegetation around you. People to this day still get goiters because they lack enough iodine. And so on...

There are references in this thread to missing "real protein", which doesn't really make sense -- but I know what they mean. It's very easy to get all the amino acids your body needs to construct the complex proteins it needs to build tissue by eating a good variety of legumes, nuts, and grains. But it's also very true that eating meat and dairy will give you complex proteins that your body can use with little or no conversion. That is, the animal has already done the work for you. That's why body builders are always eating "whey protein" supplements. It contains several different proteins composed of 20 or more amino acids in format that your body can use almost immediately. So it's quickly and easily absorbed.

I'd recommend that you be sure to master the art of smoothie making using a powdered vegan soy supplement. Make sure it's got iodine, b vitamins, and zinc in it. Buy fortified soy milk too. Eat lots of nuts and beans of many varieties. Tip: Don't eat foods that are high in copper and zinc; they cancel each other out. This is true of many types of vitamins and minerals. I'm still trying to figure it all out.

This is what I always make -- it mixes best if the powder is on the bottom or where the blade is, so this is how I make if for my smoothie maker you might need to do it in reverse:

1 banana cut in half
8 oz of fortified "Silk" soy milk
8 oz of cranberry juice
2 tablespoons of milled flax seed
1 scoop of "Whole Foods" soy protein with spirulina (or whatever brand you like)
3 oz of blueberries

Smoothie-ize it!

Support: People will always respond the way most of the people in this thread did. Quite honestly, if you take a step back, being a vegan really is pretty weird. You have to be able to laugh along with the omnivores, or they'll kick you out of society.

But I do it for my own personal health reasons. I started it as an experiment. I liked the results, so I've stuck with it. It's a work in progress.

If you're planning on making babies, don't try to raise a child as a vegan without the help of a dietitian. You'll kill your baby.

That's all I've got for the moment.

Yo Billy,
Best thing for sure. I personally think animals have rights and so may be considered extreme by a few here, but hey, get in the queue.
Your experience sounds a lot like mine. Veganism is easy if you think it is. Others need have no problem accomodating you almost anywhere and at any time if they would only ask what to get you or consider what vegan food/clothing etc actually is.
I worked in LA a lot and found it very easy, as I have in France, New Zealand, Morocco and here at home in the UK.
My 15 year old daughter has become vegan about a year ago (after a lifetime as a lacto-ovo-veggie until then) and also finds it very simple.

Peas,

Paul.
