rediscovery: depeche mode
well, it's been a long time, but i've come back to loving the mode.
i really think that if there were an instrumental version of violator it wouldn't be easy to place it in the early 90's.....
just sayin. great stuff.

Violator still kicks I must say. So does exciter. Songs of faith and devotion too.
I'm not a big fan of their early stuff but that was the sound of the times in electro I guess.
They were ahead of there time I'd say, once they broke out of the early cheese and got a little darker.
I think I first got into violator when I was 12 years old, rediscovered them when I was 20, and then again when I was 27. Now with Ipods and Itunes I don't need to "rediscover" thngs too much anymore 'cause it's just there.
I definitely throw on the mode here and there.

You can't tell me exciter's not a good album.melocoton wrote:I mean, seriously people, what kind of revisionist history is this? A Broken Frame through to Black Celebration is inarguably the height of Depeche Mode's career.
Well you can, but I won't listen.
I think 'just can't get enough' was the first song I figured out on any instrument, I think some piano somewhere when I was about eleven. So for that, I have a soft spot in my heart for it. But I still prefer the later stuff. personally.

IMHO,DM are simply the best "mainstream" electronic act of all time.
The production side of Violator and Song of faith is of very high standard.
I miss the production skills of Alan Wilder though.........
I think that their last album Playingh the Angel is up with their best....
Martin Gore still has things to show.....

I think your right in respect of using technology to make something new. Sampling anything and everything and making textures and songs from those sounds. I really liked it all at the time but i don't think they have aged very well. Black celebration was the making of them for me. A dark and moody album, Just what you want aged 14! I find construction time and Some great reward especially hard to listen to now.melocoton wrote:I mean, seriously people, what kind of revisionist history is this? I think they really hit a peak with Violator. Just a brilliant electro pop record. Really accessable but dark at the same time
Superb sounds, interesting lyrics and just a great 'complete' feel about it. The next two were good but never as good. I lost interest after that.
