What's so much better in Live6

Post by soulata » Sun Oct 15, 2006 8:55 pm

compared to 5.2.2

I haven't really explored 5.2.2 fully. I use Live to play with a band and 5.2.2 seems to do that just fine.

What are the things in 6 that'd make me upgrade.

btw, I've downloaded the demo but my DAW crashed after that and it's not back from service yet (surely not Live related hehe).

not to sound rude at all but I'd just sudjest you read the specs and try the demo when you can. then if you still feel that 5.2 is good enough for your band then I'd say stick with it but if you see something that really catches your fancy then I'd say upgrade for 119 USD cause thats a heck of a deal.

personally... I could never go back to 5.2 again.

I was very happy with the dual core support. If you've got a multicore CPU that's a gotcha for sure.

Combine the dual core support and all the crazy layering you can do with racks, and you've got something worth a couple hundred bucks right there.

Much better MIDI control and routing too.

You know you want it.

If you don't have a dual core processor (even if you do 5.2.2 works well) and you're not dying to upgrade - chill

some people say they can work faster in Live 6 and that may be true

but if you're getting by in 5.2.2 you're cool - no need to go dropping good money just yet

granted an upgrade always improves whatever you're doing and you'll definitely benefit but its not like Live 3 was to 4

they've improved a lot of things and made somethings easier to get with but...

If 5.2 works, chill until you go reach for something that's not in 5.2 and only available in 6 <-- know what I mean?

peace

Racks are really a solid addition.

racks do it for me, deep freeze is a god send also. I like the new browser and file management has they are invaluable when you do a lot of sound design but most user seems to have mixed feelings about it.

2 simple features that I dig a lot also:

The crop sample and midi timestretching.

More versatile sends, and the dual processor support to enable all of the effects...

i haven't gotten too deep into the racks or other features..yet....

but one small thing i discovered is the 'crystal reverb'

sounds magically haunting with some melodic tracks...

I'm a huge fan of the placebo effect in Live 6.

Suddenly the reverb, operator and a few other things sound much nicer. :P

What is that about the sends? Could you be more specific ?

Thanks

thanks everyone.

I guess I'll stick with 5.2 for a while, there seems to be nothing revolutionary in v6 for me - better file management is always cool but as long as there's nothing that'd make gigging with it easier I can wait.

I don't have a dual-core.

What i'm doing is running 6 to 7 tracks from live to different outs, up to 12 scenes in a song and up to 16 songs in a set. And sometimes bang out things out in simpler or impulse with padKontrol.

So nothing drastic for me there.

(I can really relate to what dj adonis said)

I do have to strongly urge you to check out racks though as that is the main feature you'd probably enjoy with your current workflow description.

contrary to the "popular" belief that all daw's are created equal.......you may not be experiencing a placibo effect........

Then again.........you might be just trying to have a laugh.....

I think I remember seeing something about the updating of the reverb algorhythm or something... during the beta testing.. but I can't hear any difference so maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think live sounds any better now to be honost. but it certainly lets me do what I want to do now!
