Reason drum kits in Live?
Reason drum kits in Live?
I have a DVD of drumkits for Reason and i was wondering if there is any way i can use these with Live? The kits are held in a single .rfl file so i am unsure how to get to the audio samples themselves.
Thanks for any help.

Damn that sucks! On the bright side it's not actually my DVD, i was lent it by a friend who uses Reason. Thanks for the heads up anyway, i will know not to buy any refills myself in future.
I guess i will hunt down some sample cd's or maybe buy Battery 3, sounds like that comes with a pretty impressive sample library.
Cheers.

I don't agree with this. If you rewire reason into Live you can use all the refills and have an amazing library of sounds at your disposal.hoffman2k wrote:No can do. Refills cant be opened. And even if you find a way to open them, it's illegal to do so.
Never buy too many refills. As soon as you get tired of reason, they're useless
Secondly, you can always bounce audio files to disk and reuse the sounds in many different ways outside of having to rewire the app.
How one can "tire" of Reason is beyond me when it is another tool always at your disposal and works with many different apps through rewire. This is poor advice, IMO.

Isn't it a fact that refills can not be legally opened?
And I know that some refills are/were marketed "contains xxx wav/aiff files"!
Files that you can only use in reason. Not in any other program (unless you use reason with it)
I guess my point is: Almost any sample disc is compatible with other samplers and hosts. But not a refill....
If you want a cool sample from the pack, you always have to bounce it.
The only alternative is hoping that the company who made the refill also released their pack on a sample disc in various formats.

Yes Reason Drum Kits do work with Ableton. I used them just last song but decided to remix with Impulse. I dont understand how it could be illegal to use Refills when its legal to use Reason as Rewire with Live, being that Reason drum kits is a Reason app?

Oh okay I should have read this closer. you cant open the samples themselves in Live, but why not use Reason as Rewire?Bonescan wrote:I have a DVD of drumkits for Reason and i was wondering if there is any way i can use these with Live? refills are so outdated..
you must be nuts to buy them if you have the option to get them as an 'open' library..
they we're comfortable years ago because they do a good compression..
but harddisks are cheap these days, so why bother..
I also thought the Propheads came with this format because of legal issues due to the portable reason format RPS, which can include samples, but not from refills..
So that makes them not so portable afterall, hehehe
i.m.h.o. refills are history..

and that raises another question;
is it legal to 'open' a refill for private use in other apps?
*versus*
is it legal to 'bounce' the samples?
to me that would be pretty much the same..

Re: Reason drum kits in Live?
I only own Live right now, i was lent the Refill DVD by a friend who uses Reason. I don't really have that much spare cash to buy Reason also, maybe i could find good use for it, but Live is more than i need already to be honest, i don't use anywhere near all of it's features.Oginite wrote:Oh okay I should have read this closer. you cant open the samples themselves in Live, but why not use Reason as Rewire?
Can anyone maybe recommend me some good drum sample disks to look at? And also some plug-in drum solutions other than Battery? I have been told that the Luxonix drum sampler thingy is good, but i don't know of many others.
edit: also sorry to be an idiot, but can someone explain to me exactly what 'bouncing' the samples means?

bouncing means rendering to disk as an audio file..
bouncing = rendering = saving = exporting: as audio

You can't use reason refills without reason legally. Even if you are rewiring the refills into ableton, you're using reason to accomplish this.

er, no I'm not paid to say that. I have tons of refills from way before I ever started with the Props (which was only a few months ago). I find that there is no reason (no, pun intendedhoffman2k wrote:Well you're paid to say that aren't you?robtronik wrote:I don't agree with this. Your critique doesn't hold. Now, if you buy refills without Reason, then that's a problem.
But otherwise, you get full use of all the power of a rewire capabie app (like Live), plus the benefits of Reason, and full use of all the audio samples in the refill.
I'm not being obstinate or blind due to some corporate allegiance, its just a fact. You have no limitations with refills in Reason as used with a Rewired app. You want a single sample?
Bounce it to disk out of Reason. Or use it via Reason into a rewired application.
I'd say the primary issue with Refills is the searchability and internal organization of them (but that is really encumbent on the refill maker to organize their libraries well amongst other things).
Aside from that, use what works for you, of course.

Try getting rid of your refills when you sell reason. You cant do much more with them then giving them away with the app.
My critique holds IMHO.
Why anybody would want to sell reason is beyond you. Just like having no audio input in the damn app was beyond me...
I'm not saying that reason is bad...
I'm saying that refills suck because they force you to use reason. Which is overkill if you're just looking for a lindrum sample thats burried in one of those refills.
