Notch 4

Newbie question: what's the thinking behind "Notch 4" ?

Sounds like it cleans up my sound quite well, but who designed it and what's the theory?

Nothing too heavy mind, just curious...

Looks like its using 4 of the parametric bands to create a 'multinotch' filter. It may help to 'thin out' the sound a bit.

To be honest I'm not sure what 'exactly' is happening when you apply a multi notch, but i'm sure i read somewhere that one of its uses is to remove 'harmonic distortion' i.e. distortion which has a fundamental frequency and then has integer multiple distortion bands. This would require implementation of an actual multinotch filter though, or manual tuning of individual notch filters to land directly on the frequencies of interest.

Never having been in a proper studio or on a music course in my life I just wouldn't know. Been fiddling with Cubase's multi-notch filters in an attempt to clean up my messy mixes in vain, and then suddenly Live's Notch4 just does it out the box and - wow - how did they know? I'm using those settings in Cubase now.

I suppose that's pro experience for you. I was kinda hoping that Ableton could tell me more about it - the guy who actually wrote the present surely must have *some* idea, he didn't just guess I'm sure!
