M-powered pro tools windows xp

Hello
Iam using the m-audio firewire 1814 running m-powered pro tools ver 7.1
When I try to adjust the playback engine"buffer size" I get an error message that says "pro tools is unable to reaquire the hardware because it is in use by another application"

Another error message I get says "access violation occured"
Then it says " Rewire DLL"

I dont have any idea of what other application may be running or whats causing this problem. Please help.
