m-audio usb audiophile and windows xp drivers dissappear?

so, first off, i know the m-audio usb audiophile is not top choice!

i have had it for a while and funding is limited, so the answer im looking for is not "buy a new soundcard" as thats in the wings. also, "buy a mac" is not the solution either, so keep your cakeholes shut iffin thats all you can come up with! i also know at least a few of you out there have this card and im wondering if you have this problem.

last night i went to play a gig, powerd up my lappie and audiophile and bam, windows wants to install the device. i can see the app icon in the taskbar, i can even open the settings app, but i cant connect to the m-audio device, as the drivers are not there...

since i carry all my installers around with me, it was no problem to uninstall and reinstall, but it got my night started off on the wrong foot to say the least, and i dont want this to happen at gigs anymore.

i have had this problem before, but it is seemingly very random, and only happens after i have powered off the computer for a while, whcih makes no sense to me. its like it literally forgets that the device has already been installed... grrr.

i have searched through the m-audio websites (they dont appear to have a forum) and googled my question, but to no avail yet.

i am getting a new system, but i suspect the problem lies with the m-audio drivers/xp combo so new hardware may not make a diff...

current system (quite laughable...):
THE LATEST DRIVERS FOR EVERYTHING...
compaq presario 2100US
celeron 1.7
m-audio usb audiphile
XP SP2

this computer has never (and will never) be on the internet, so there is no spyware / virus / update junk to be worried about..

any thoughts?

Probably a system recource issue. . .did you add any new devices to your system recently?

Did you call M-Audio tech support yet?

I had the same thing happen with the m-audio Fast Track Pro twice now. Seems that if Live locks up and has to be rebooted or the task has to be terminated, then the drivers have to be reinstalled AND I had to reconnect on a different USB port.

here are some updates to the situation (for those of you in similar boats):

i have not had time to sit on the phone with tech support.

it has been suggested i make sure and use the same usb port every time. i have been somewhat dilligent in making sure to do this, but it has not appeared to help. i will double up making sure...

so with the new pc on the same usb port, the drivers must be installed EVERY TIME I SHUT DOWN THE DANG THING. an annoyance to say the least.

so i tried asio4all. fantastic piece of code, allows me to essentially make an aggregate device and use my internal soundcard as a headphone cue, (which i still havent / dont do - due to the way im working now, but the option is nice) i can get the latency nice and low. however there are a few caveats:

1-the drivers for the hardware are still required. every time i tried to use asio4all without the hardware drivers installed i get a BSOD.

2-asio4all CRASHED ON ME AT A GIG LAST NIGHT! (a drum and bass wedding after party - very interesting ***) aggggh!!! i had tested it for a few hours, but apprently not long enough, cause the audio in live stopped and woul not restart until i restarted the pc. i know for a fact it was asio4all due to information in the eventvwr.

so anybody else got any ideas:
1-how to keep these drivers installed? i havent been clearing any temp files since i learned part of the app was stored in a temp folder, but apparently this hasnt helped...

2-how to make asio4all more stable? im going to jaunt over to the site and see what i can come up with....

i proceeded to show up and really tear it up with my first evar dnb set. folks were nodding there heads and very approving. recording the set, things are going well. computer crashes, i then proceed to lose the whole first set and do a ho-hum second set riddled with frustration and fear that the pc will crash at any moment. i now have a cold and a sore throat due to outdoor gig in cold weather...

sigh...

i had this issue a couple times with my pc but i updated to the latest m-audio driver for the audiophile

double check that you have the newest one since they came out with an ASIO driver for the audiophile earlier this year

it runs fantastic on my system

yeah, surprisingly i saw they had a new one and it seems the problem happens twice as often now....

newest drivers on everything....
