Does anyone know how to apply an audio or midi effect to a single clip slot rather than a whole field of clips?

Cheers but that seems like I could end up with a lot of different channels for a variation on the same clip. Is there no way to drop an effect on a clip, then you could copy it, drag it to anywhere in your session and it will retain the effect.

route it to another track & record the clip with the effect, then drag on to your desired track.

Freeze the track in Live 6, then drag the frozen clip to an unused audio track. Job done.

thanks for the help guys. I'm assuming that freezing tracks is not an option in Live 5.0?

you could resample it to arrangement and split out the bit you want...
there is freeze in 5, but i'm not sure if it works the same as in 6. try right clicking on the clip.

I think I have your answer...

Go into the clip view of the particular clip you wish to affect. There should be a pull down menu there that lets you chose "clip", "mixer", or any effect you have loaded into that Track.

Choose the effect you wish to apply to that particular clip from the first pull-down menu. Then choose the parameter you wish to apply from the second pull down menu. Draw in or play in how much of that effect you wish to apply to that particular clip. Go into the other clips on that track and draw it in so none of the effect goes on those other clips. I think this should get you the desired result... which is effects on only one clip in a track.

Freeze is in Live 5, But "Deep Freeze" is the new scheme in 6 that lets you drag a frozen clip (Audio OR MIDI) to another track, where it becomes a neat little self-contained file.

well, it's an answer until the sum total of all the effects on that track get to be too much for your computer to handle. at that point it's time to start bouncing (if freeze doesn't work, it's easy to drag the clip into the arrange screen and render it.)

I'm trying to get in the habit of bouncing/freezing anything that I won't actively mess with during a show -- and even if I want to mess with it, I'll think hard before letting myself. :)

Drop the effect in a send. Crank the send knob up on the audio track. In the clips you do NOT want the effect, use the clip envelopes to switch the send knob off.

Now the effect will automatically turn on or off for wich ever clip you do or do not want the effect on.

Experiment with the pre and post switches on the send channel. Of course this will result in the need to experiment with track volume + send volume level settings in the clip envelopes as well.

you could stack the different effects in a rack and assign a controller to switch between the different layers in the rack

or give each layer in the rack a gain/utility plugin and assign the volume controls to the 8 basic controls of the rack .. this way you can decide how much of the audio is sent to each effect layer
With some clever dual assignments of the basic controls you could even sset it up so that raising the volume of layer 1 would automaticly lower the volume of layer 2 and 3 ...
