Previewing Function with Ableton?

Post by Alex_18 » Wed Oct 18, 2006 3:59 am

Hi, I will be using an X-session pro, a BCR2000 + my macbook with Ableton.

I would like to know if its possible to plug my headphones directly into Ableton for previewing the next track that ill be firing off into the mix, or if Ill have to try something else?

Please and thanks...

you really need a soundcard with at least 2 (stereo) outputs for previewing.
you can get away with it by splitting the macs stereo headphone with a stereo-to-mono splitter cable so your master output and headphone output are only mono if you can't get your hands on a decent external soundcard.

...ummm. i don't think that'll plug into a macbook. :D
you need to look for something that'll plug into your firewire or usb ports. search the forum for soundcard recommendations as it's a topic that comes up pretty regularly. if you want really good gear RME or HALO stuff seems to be pretty highly rated for macs, but you can go all the way down to a no name cheap arse usb card.
i'm not on mac so take this with a grain of salt, but my advice would be to get something firewire based, or failing that something using USB2 (NOT USB 1.1), but it's kind of a personal preference meets budget type of situation.
do some research over the web as theres heaps of info, plenty of it in this forum...

I have one and it does the job. I play out once or twice monthly and have not had any issues with it. DO NOT hotlink it - you must start it before booting your computer on.

Assuming im using the following equipment:

X-session pro (DJ mixer/midi controller)
BCR 2000 (Midi controller)
Trigger finger
Macbook + ableton
2 speakers + 2 booth monitors

and this soundcard

can someone walk me through setting it all up and tell me what wires I should need etc, I know its a lot of explaining but it would be much appreciated.
