Garageband as a rewire (slave) application
Garageband as a rewire (slave) application
Hi gurus,
It's possible to use Live as master and Garageband 3.x as slave (thus using GB insruments through Live?)
Did anybody tried it?

I don't think GB will allow itself to be slaved--it'll always be the master app.

I'm a big fan of GarageBand as well, and I've often wished that it (like Live) would lend itself to being either Rewire master or slave. So, what I do if I want the GB instrument's sound in Live is Rewire them, play the GB instrument along with my live sequence, render the GB instrument, then drag it into Live.
There are ways to pipe sound from GB into Live--like using Jack for OS X. It routes sound between any two apps in OS X. You can check it out at http://www.jackosx.com/. There are a couple of other apps that do the same thing, but that's the only one I could remember the name of right now.
So, using something like that you could conceivably route sound from GB into Live without Live slaving to GB, and use Live's fx, routing, etc., to your heart's content.

It would be nice to know how. Can you point me to some sample on the net?jesso wrote:I like garage band too.
Didnt i hear that live 6 (i dont have it yet) lets you use your garageband instruments more easily? ( I dont know how... glanced at the sound on sound review)
This means that any Jam Pack content can be played in live?

I allready use a lot of my jampack content in live 5 (just the loops though)
They show up in my browser like any other loops...
What i would like to be able to do is use my Garageband instruments in live.
Unfortunatly, garageband will only work as a Rewire master, not a slave.
What they say in sound on sound is
"you can now view and use individual instruments in live from a rewire master"
Im just gunna try this now...

I have tried but there is no compatibility with rewire, Live 6 doesn't seem to recognise GB & there is no option to bring ext audio in from it (unlike for eg. Reason). However if you buy/have Sampler you can load all the GB instruments (exs files + their associated wav or aif files) in it & play them. So if you have any Jam Packs then you already have a large library of sounds + all the loops that come with it as well. Hope this helps.....?

thanks resonator man.
i just tried it with my live 6 demo and couldnt find a way to do it.
If it was possible to have your garage band instruments in live, there would be no real reason to run garageband at all really... other than a different way of making music (which is good to do somtimes) but you wouldnt have anything in garageband that you didnt have in live.
Sampler is an extra though isnt it? Im about to upgrade to live 6 and wouldnt be able to afford the extra i dont think.
Any other work arounds?
Are there any other samplers on the market that are a bit cheaper?

also rahio,
when you export from garage band, do you render to itunes then drag into live from there?
the whole thing is a bit messy for my liking... plus my poor little g4 dosnt run so good with all those applications open at once..
i think a sampler might be the solution..
Just rememberd, i have a copy of sampletank that i got with my mbox, (probly not the full version). Will this do the same thing?

Sampler is extra $199USD but you get a discount if you buy when you upgrade to L6. Not sure about other samplers. I'm not sure of any other way around at this stage, as I haven't really looked as I already have sampler, it has been nice to use all these sounds that I had from GB + JamPacks from when I first started out, then progressed onto other things when I found GB too restrictive for what I was wanting to do. All the same it was good place to start out that came free with a computer......Sampler is an extra though isnt it? Im about to upgrade to live 6 and wouldnt be able to afford the extra i dont think.

this means you were able to actually use all GB instruments (Pianos, guitar, basses) by importing it in Sampler? I had a good library of SF2 and they did not play well, I even bought a library from Sonic Implants but had no success. Do they sound as they do in GB or you have to spend time in sampler to make it work correctly? This could push me to buy sampler (discount lost anyway...) because I have sampletank I love but it won't make it for mac until 2007.... I want a Mac, I want plug my USB keyboard to it...and play.

I do the export to iTunes b/c I can then spit it out from there as an aiff. However, you can export your riffs, loops, etc., to a folder on skip the itunes step, but it'll be in the .m4a format--which you can then just drag into Live or use the file browser.jesso wrote:also rahio,
