Monitoring and Playback at the same Time

Post by Gerhard » Wed Jul 17, 2002 10:51 am

Hi, currently, a track can either play a clip or monitor the track's input, not both at the same time. Suppose this were changed in such a way that monitoring would be independent of clip playback. Launching a clip (maybe a clip that has just been recorded) would not stop monitoring. Instead, you would here both the clip and the input signal. The monitor switch is completely independent of the clips.

Also, each track would have both a Monitor switch and a Record Enable (= Arm) switch that can be operated independently, ie. you can record in a track w/o monitoring, and you can monitor w/o arming the track for recording.

Please consider these changes and tell me your opinion.

Gerhard. Yes!! This would save a lot of routing here and be more logical when using ableton from a remote controller, the way it has to be laid out I mean.

If you could couple this with being able to route track outputs to a track input in "Live Input" mode and possibly have the option of making the clips exclusive\non-exclusive play on a track with "Live Clips" being able to be pre-setup on a track with their own loop length I will be absolutely over the mon with this software persoanlly.

A yes to what you say from me though. Good effort, this is building into something quite special. Thank you.

Regards

Yes, I second that, would save me from a few workarounds and cabling. And if this could be logically done, sort of TotalMix (routing track output to input using a track selector like the InChannel selector now if LiveIn is selected) would be fine.
Besides that it is great to see the features you projected upcoming, it would be nice to have the solo and mute functions seperated from the monitoring or presented with a different approach (like preselecting solo and mutings for different channels/tracks and activating/deactivating with a single button all at once and sort of presets to recall different selection sets).

Maybe you already guessed it: I'm working with a Mutliface, and it is full of possibilities, like Live is. Love it more each day...

No time to elaborate at the moment, but I whole-heartedly endorse this idea! :P

Good idea Gerhard.

Really need to try it out in action to find pitfalls.

I realize this is very old but I need this feature. If you're using Ableton for MIDI routing you currently need double the number of tracks for playing clips and monitoring.

I think it would be best implemented this way: "In" no longer mutes the output of clips. I've been using Ableton for years and haven't figured out what problem that was meant to solve. If anyone can explain it to me though I'd appreciate it.

You officially win oldest necro-bump ever on the Ableton forums. 2002 and the current CEO of the company was doing tech support on the forums :)
