M-Audio interfaces... Any good ??

Still trying to suss out what interface to go for, even though my funds are dictating that I can only afford M-Audio firewire, does anyone have any opinions, good or bad on these, specifically the cheaper ones.

I have the audiophile firewire since 6 months (220euro), and had no problems with it. Works fine and looks fine too. The only thing i complain are the knobs, they seem a bit crappy.

I bought a Firewire 410 twice. First one didn't work because Sam Ash didn't give me the driver (dorks). Second one I bought I had a slew of trouble with it on my blue G4 tower. At the point of being ready to get a replacement, I tried plugging it into my powerbook G4. No problems whatsoever.

If you're looking to get a Firewire 410 and have a Mac, make sure it's a new one with Tiger. My Dual 500 running 10.3 was a nightmare. However, it looks smooth sailing with my G4 powerbook.

I've had the audiophile for about 2 yrs now. Although it started out okay, over the past few months I've picked up problems with the power supply. It just switches off randomly during sets. This can be VERY FUCKING FRUSTRATING when you're playing live. I've always thought the audiophile had really good quality sound with a deep sonic range (a lot of this is also dependent on your monitors), but I recently got a echo indigo from a friend of mine, and suddenly I'm hearing all sorts of little sounds that were never there before, on the same speakers, which leads me to believe that the audiophile is in fact not all that. There are a lot of mixed feelings about M Audio, but I'm starting to believe that it is for the better part just a crock of shit.

Check out echo's new range of firewire cards, they''re in the same price range, and I'm really impressed with the sound quality of the indigo, so I'm sure these won't be too bad either, otherwise splash out on a motu or rme, you deffo won't be dissapointed.

In reality there are two sides to the story......but in the case of the fw 410 it is without a doubt the most troublsome soundcard in history.

Although there are some who have had good luck with it, you'll find a much larger percentage who hate it.

I don't hear anywhere near the complaints for the audiophile.........

I have a firewire audiophile as well.
At home run it on PC
and used it 2 times on an Ibook G4 for deejaying.
Both working fine!

Cheers folks !! I'm glad I asked this , 'cause I really think I might just dodge the M-Audio now. I used to use an Echo Indigo PCMCIA card, which was fine, but no slot in the Macbook. Now looking at Focusrite Saphire LE, Presonus Inspire, Edirols etc. Guess I'll just have to spend a bit more to get the quality. Any experience of these anybody ??

id love to get a motu ultralite....

but for now... il let this crappy audiocard my slave...=)

make wonderful music out of a crappy audio soundcard..=)

thank god m-audio is there to save poor musicians-)

I have a 410, and have had absolutely no problems with it under WinXP Pro. I occasionally lose control of the master volume pot, but this has happened only a couple of times, and I can still reach for the mixer and sole it there. Rebooting will get it back.

I must say that a crucial thing for me has been the direct monitoring capabilities. It's a blessing. Audio I/O is pretty decent (not that I know a lot about other brands, anyway).

I guess I would be one of the ones to vote "I'm happy" with this... although I admit M-Audio seems to get a lot of heat in this forum.
