Ableton ABANDONS DJ's with Live 6? Apparently so...
i think there are some useful things for DJs in Live 6 but personally I would have liked to see a decent pull/push style control for use when trying to synch live up to a truntable.
the nudge feature brought to us in version 5 doesnt really do what I want it to do
sure you can ride the fader, use various hardware/midi routings to achieve synch but all i want is a little + and - buttons that allow me to mix ableton into an analogue source in the traditional way but then continue my set Ableton style.
I guess Torque can help with this but would be nice to have it without the need for another piece of hardware to lug around.

Yeah, if tons of people can hook up nudging with pd, ControlAid, Bome, etc then you have to think it's not too hard to code. None of these little bits seem that hard to do, except fixing absolute/relative session automation.
Now that they've gotten to the clip-warping-as-master thing, I want an option to have the global quantize value reset to a clip launched on the fly. That plus nudging will make synching to TTs/CDs/other musicians like butter.

You're kidding right?masterbeat9999 wrote:Is anyone else using Ableton to DJ live disappointed with Live 6? I just finally had time to install and start using it, and I'm surprised and very disappointed to see there are VIRTUALLY NO changes or improvements in the area of DJing with Live.
I've carefully watched (and posted) suggestions to the boards and forums since starting to DJ with Live a year ago with version 5.0. I've watched all the other suggestions as well and really don't see ANY of the most requested features for DJing incorporated into 6.
As further evidence (?) they've completely left "DJ'ing" with Ableton out of the tutorials in 6 - there was a nice section on it in 5. Where is it now?
I can't BELIEVE that we still can't control the frigging SIZE and COLOR of the marker scrolling in clip view. It's still A TINY 1 px BLACK BAR that you can barely see in good conditions let alone in a club environment from any distance. Come on ABLETON! How hard is it to make this marker a COLOR and a SIZE WE CAN SEE! Search the forums and there are about 4,267 requests for this.
How about warp markers that we can change colors on ourself - making our own makers that mean things, like intros/exit marks?
And one of the most requested features of all time, since 4.0, and talked about in EVERY review of Live as DJ software - the ability to see 2 playing clips at the same time.
NADA. NOTHING.
I was sticking by Live for 6.0 thinking they would at least make a couple of these improvements. Instead they seem to have completely IGNORED everyone using the software to DJ.
Mabye it's time to start looking at Traktor again. Or the new software coming out from Pioneer, Numark, etc.
Come on Ableton - don't forget about your loyal DJ's!
2 things pop off the top of my head
crossfader curves and Racks w/ macros
and multi mapping <-- that has kill switch written all over it
and perhaps "djing" is or isn't the correct term to use but the possibilities are really limited to your imagination. I've been spending my spare time figuring out ways to actually perform with Ableton (in between Torq sessions of course) and with a proper controller you can really get funky for a while with it <---> it's really not about the program as it is about you and what you do with it.

yeah, I think 6 is an amazing improvement for DJing. For all the reasons already pointed at above.
The only thing that I think might be worth asking for in a subsequent version is:
- Better clip management in Session view (i.e. set a preference whereby a clip is greyed out if played already - which equates to letting one know that a track has been played, but when you save or can reset clip colors when done)
- Maybe midi navigable browser, or at least minimize and maximize the windows via MIDI assignment.
- waveform markers w/ text in session view. That would be nice for making quick reference notes on tracks.
But all in all, I could have none of the above and be totally happy (and a bit overwhelmed) with all that Live6 has for DJing.
Seriously, I think you are looking at the glass half empty.

Yeah, so, I was thinking to myself today about how Live is the most powerful software-based DJing tool EVER. Yes, it can be time-consuming to figure out exactly how you want it set up, and how to build features that aren't included with the software, but that's all part of the process. It weeds out the retards.
I don't think they "abandoned" anyone.

It's normally not called a pitch bend, it's called a pitch controldjsentinel wrote:Um, are you retarted? How do you think they keep two turntables in sync?Meef Chaloin wrote:eh?! when does a dj ever use pitch bend  :?JohnDP wrote:pitch bend is still missing...
They don't warp em...
Most people think of pitch bend as the little wooden knob on Nord Leads or little wheels on synths
pitch control is the slider to the right of most turntables and cd-j's
they both control pitch but one of the 2 usually snaps back to zero - that would be the pitch bend
pitch control stays where it's at
people insisting on having pitch bend so they dont have to warp tracks are idiots. the whole point of djing with a laptop is that you dont have to worry about sync, that you can focus on more important things.
and having multiple clips viewable? hello? when have djs ever been able to see waveforms on vinyl? sure you can see the general progression of the track, but come on. this is just silly.
live has been a powerful dj tool from the get go.

no one likes to go out dancing to crappy music, that's a givenkooki415 wrote:and all in all, what the audience really cares about is what they hear, not your amazing abilities to beatmatch with a laptop.
if you just want to look cool get some freaking vinyl.
but but also don't like to go out and see their performer "checking" their email
a lot of heads who go out pay a lot of attention to the performer (most of us would) and if the performer isn't giving the energy back to the people it gets kind of boring and people will leave the dance floor
Even if you're using Ableton to get your point across and call it djing - you've got to be someone what entertaining to watch - which means looking like you're doing something other than staring at a laptop
even vid's I see of Sasha's djing with Ableton he's doing all kinds of shit (what I don't know)
but you have to be somewhat exciting to watch
