Leopard & Xgrid

Just read on the sneak preview of Leopard (OS X.5) on Apple's site that Xgrid will work with cocoa applications. I understand that Xgrid is a technology built into OS X that lets you plug Macs together to distribute processing and take advantage of the processing power of additional computers and is already supported by Apple's Logic. Does anyone know if we'll ever be able to use this technology with Live or other applications?

I've used xgrid, it's not totally realtime.
Also you need OSX server running to actually use it, client only comes with... client.

the server takes packets from the master client, and then puts it out
to all the slave clients if and when they are available (you can set
it to always run, or to run when idle etc)... very useful for batch
rendering video or 3d.

Thanks for the reply gomi. I suspected there might be an issue as audio developers would surely already have taken advantage. I would love to see a feature in OS X that just let you firewire a couple of Macs together as with target disk mode but to take advantage of the other systems processors, ram or I/O devices. Surely technology is only round the corner? If something like this was available hopefully applications like Live will take advantage. I was kind of hoping that now Live 6 is multi-processor aware those of us with more than one Mac could benefit in the same way as when we run Logic nodes.

logic does it by using their own protocol over the ethernet cable.

it's realtime, and hard coded into the logic app i think.

xgrid was designed with science in mind for doing huge calculation (think seti as
an example).. i tried for awhile to get it to batch encode divx, but heheh
didnt get it working... this new feature sounds like it will let people like
handbrake to take advantage of an xgrid and encode even faster...

when i was messing with it on my network my xgrid ran anywhere from 3 to 100Ghz
depending on how many machines were sitting idle

How much power do you need?
I am happy with my Macintel Mini and live but what about a single MacPro or wait a while for the quad core Macpro (Yicks 8 cores in one machine.. now where is the bottle neck!)

I'm basing my sets around live and traktor. I need to be mobile and to run Live and Traktor from the one keyboard on two monitors as space is at a premium. My Xone 3D to control live whilst a faderfox controls traktor. Ive looked at the muse receptor but i dont like the implementation of midi cc's in the uniwire plugin.

If the new macbook pros with core 2 duo and 3 gig ram can run live with 8 tracks of typically NI Komplete plugins alongside traktor and another monitor great. I'm trying to future proof my purchasing plan as I've been stupid before. I'm looking at the option of buying a macmini to share some of the workload. Xserve (exactely what i need) is just too big at 30" deep, the Macpros way too bulky.

What about that AUnetSend plugin? I haven't tried it but I think it allows you to send audio to another machine for processing in realtime.
