Hi,
I think this feature is a must. MIDI CC assignments are very frustrating in Ableton live. U understand the concept of Live--: a very customizable environment for audio/midi with as few limitations as possible--- is probably the reason why programmers of Live have decided to not to allow the user to save MIDI mappings with instruments/racks, since this could cause mappings mish-mash. I belive that for live performance , 16 tracks of sequences is well enough. Therefore i beleive that, if the user wants, he could set up 16tracks, each responding to MIDI channel 1-16. A rack would sit in each track. Sending a bank select/program change message to a rack would allow the user to automatically load instruments/effects/midi plugins setups with mappings (between Macro knob-->effect/../.. parameter) into the rack and the macro knobs would respond to midi CCs. This would require the addition of:
--a Bank/programms organiser (there is space in the left top part of Live ...ie just add another browser)
--a bank/program number to be saved with each clip.
This way midi mappings to each setup could be automatically saved. Also and more importantly , the user wouldnt have to search and load racks during performance. This way NI Kore would be of little point (this is possible with ni kore but the CPU consuption of NI kore "VST host VSTplugin" is too high)
I only tried the demo version of Live 5 and read about new features of Live6. If such setup is possible in the current versin of Live, please let me know. I am developing a freeware performance system in MAX/MSP ( http://tsunami.rulez.cz/Onarb.htm ) that requires a VST host (MAX/MSP doesnt allow for sending tempo information to plugins, so no sync to tempo is possible with delays etc,...plus it is not a stable and CPU efficient VST host. Live is the onle vst host so far that is almost perfect for me. However I beleive that from my suggested fimprovements, many other users would benefit.
Sincerely,
itchy

I also stuck with LIve not sending appropiate bank-change messages to my external synths. I really dont care about the Motif, cause it is easy to handle, but I'd really love to make clip-based sound-changes with my Clavia Engine.
Program-changes work fine, but the Engine stucks on Bank No 1, Motif on the General Midi Bank.
In my oppinion, appropiate bank-change-command (notes-window) would make Live the killing application for live-playing and controlling.

The techsupport told me, that it would work with a waldorf synth. Ok so far, but it doesn`t work with me Yamaha, Clavia & Kurzweil devices. Nothing changed yet. I hope they change the order of the program-change-data to:unsuccessful handshake wrote:hey-

1st: msb 00, then
2nd: lsb 32, finally
3rd: program-change.
As far as I know, they send the data in another, unusual order.

Hey onarb,
I think your ideas are good, +1.
I have some threads on rack improvements you should take a look at
( http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=49851 ).
There are a few others on similar topic by Silicon/Silicium.
For everything (Ext Hardware, MultiTimbral/MultiOut au/vsti's) thats used with live to considered and fully integrated, thats what I'd love to see.

Guys, I really miss a way to change rack by external MIDI control in Live 6 (for example by using MIDI Program Change events).
As far as I understand (and I hope I'm wrong) the only way to change a rack seems to mark its library icon and use the mouse and cursor to hot-swap the rack for a new preset from the brower window. That's bad news for me, as I perform with physical instruments and need to do all changes in Live by MIDI foot pedals. If this is not sorted out I'm seriously considering leaving Live and re-build my performance set-up in MAX/msp.
I'd prefere MIDI Program Change for calling up rack presets because I already have a good hardware based set-up including a tc Electronic FireworX and I'd like to re-build my FireworX patches with Live 6's racks and be able to set up MIDI bindings for this laptop rig to the same MIDI P Ch pedals used when I perform with the hardware rig. This kind of rules out the workaround to assign MIDI to the on/off button of daisy-chained racks ('cause then I would need to first turn of the old rack before turning on the new - crazy!)
