djing... vinyl & midi mapping

Post by psx » Wed Oct 25, 2006 8:34 pm

Ok... if the subject isn't confusing enough, here's what I want to do.

I want to incorporate Live into my dj sets. I have 2 tt's, a powerbook and an m-audio midi keyboard.

First, I want to be able to adjust Live's tempo to match the tempo of a given record. This doesn't have to be automatic. I've read about mapping the tempo control to a midi slider. Seems simple enough, but it doesn't work as nice in practice. I've tried mapping my kb's volume slider to the tempo which works but the range is huge, from 60-200. I want to be able to adjust it in a range of say 78-110 since I mostly play hip-hop, rap and reggae. I also want it to increment in whole numbers. Right now it's just too sensitive. Another idea was to have keys that would either increment by 1 or decrement. (example: C# = +1bpm, C = -1bpm).

Second. I want to be able to have a record playing and grab a loop and start it playing. I can do this ONCE using some simple mapping. I mapped one key to arm the track, and a second key to select the first clip. This works, but after I record one loop, the second key just plays the clip. What I think needs to happen is when I press that key, it either starts recording (if the first clip is empty) or skips down to the next empty clip.

Anyone? Again, I'm using a powerbook (mac).

at the bottom of arrange view (the traditional looking view) are the boxes to set the bpm. set that to your range.

then assign a midi controller to it, in Live 6 you can set the range that control has, set it to a value that makes it smooth for you. (60-110bpm, range would be 0-50).

recording a loop, this is pretty cool...
arm a track, have the set playing.
set the global quantise for 'n' measures
click the clip to start it recording, the click it again (in essence it's a slow double click)
the second clip click stops the recording after 'n' measures has passed.
play with it, you'll see.

Few things -

If it matters I'm using Live 5. I found the tempo range inputs but they don't seem to have any effect once the controller is mapped. I can still go from 60-200.

I'll keep searching. I've found some good stuff so far.

I did some messing around last night and came up with something that does *almost* everything I want, but it has it's quirks. It'd take a page and a half to explain so after work I'll try to get a screenshot posted.

I had more questions but I'm already late for work!

Thanks man! That link was exactly what I was looking for. Cheers!

Now for the live looping stuff... Here's what I have so far:

Hopefully that makes sense. I'm not sure if it's obvious what's happening in the screen shot. I'll explain if necessary. It works but there are some issues. I think most of my problems can be solved if I can figure out how to navigate via midi. For example, in the 2 tracks to the left (A and B), I want to have a single key that would select the next clip and start playing it.
