Special MIDI Routing
Special MIDI Routing
Question: Is it possible to route MIDI CC data from a VST instrument to an insert effect placed after the instrument? I can't get it working...
Thanks

vst DO send midi, I have made a few that only send midi, no sound at all.
-----
Example of how to send midi out of a VST in Live:
if you drop a midi instrument "sequencer" on a midi channel called "channel" then make a new midi channel and set its midi input from = "channel" -- you will see another drop down beneath, where you can choose your midi instrument "sequencer"
-----
the problem you are having is that your insert effect is looking in the wrong place for its midi input, it is looking at the parent channels midi source, not the preceding instruments output.
Sadly, Live still has a bit of a flaw in its routing set up, you cant set 'audio from' on a midi channel and you cant set 'midi from' on an audio channel.
That means you can take midi from a step sequencer instrument, assign it to a filter in a new midi channel ... but you cant route any audio through that midi channel.
You can route midi to effects on Audio channels .. but not Lives effects (!) only VST effects. And .. just to make your brain burst with info ...also you cant route the midi from a VST midi sequencer to an audio tracks midi eneabled vst plugin.
I do have a fix for all that - but I'm busy right now so I'll probably pot t later.
essentially it is a VST which is just a 'pipe', you put it on a midi track, route your control signals to that midi track - then from that track to your audio track.
it's the best way without using something like IAC or midiyoke.

Thank you for your replies. I will look closer into the problem. Livelab's LiveSlice does output audio and midi, and indeed the routing in Live doesn't really acount for that. The individual loopslices in LiveSlice can output midi Controller Changes on two channels to control for example a Filter cutoff effect placed after the audio output of LiveSlice. Which would be great. I have understood that EnergyXT does it, but I really would like to do it in Live. Thanks again...

then ive made a new midi track and set it's input from "abs", there are no submenus, just "pre or post fx", and if i move the pots of absynth, they do not control at all the new absynth Ive put on the new midi track, Ive tried with several VST, so what VST do ya use?
I guess absynth doesn't send out midi ? hmm. I tend to use my own VSTi because I am a cheapskate !
there's something crappy here that certainly sends out midi
