Using SooperLooper with Live for realtime looping

Post by aviavi » Sat Oct 21, 2006 10:53 pm

Hello. I wanted to share a recent looping software discovery, and how to set it up with Live. The software is SooperLooper (see: http://essej.net/sooperlooper/ )

It's a fantastic program for Mac that really fills sorely-missed functionality in Live for live looping. The drag is that the documentation kinda sucks. However, with the help of fellow Ableton posters, and a little snooping around, I got it going with Live -- and it totally rocks. Here's how to set it up in Live:

Setup three tracks in Ableton.

1 is a midi track titled Sooperlooper INput. The only thing on the track is the sooperlooper plugin. it leaves a space for an instrument you will not be adding.

2 is an audio track that is set with the input as your guitar input with monitor selected to "In" and the output set to 2- Sooperlooper Input that we just made with the bottom specific to 3/4 Sooperlooper - not sure why i used 3/4 but i think it worked better.

3- is an audio track with the input set to 2- Sooperlooper Input and channels 3/4 of the Sooperlooper. The output of this track is set to Master or wherever you want it to go. (This track is mainly useful for capturing the audio out of the SuperLooper to make Live Clips for further manipulation.)

You can also use SooperLooper in stand-alone mode, but I haven't tried that yet.

thank you for the description. I never found out how to make SL work as AU in Live.
instead i have used the Standalone version, which works quite well once you have found out how to set up the audio routing with the Jack tools .

btw. there is a fresh Universal Binary version of SooperLooper out since some days.

in an effort for additional clarity/explanation/exploration here is the original response from Jesse the creator of SooperLooper
Check out this helpful tip from the SL mailing list archives:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/mess ... d=12997823

The key is to insert the SL plugin on a MIDI track, and then route
audio to/from other audio tracks. Then you should be able to setup
the midi bindings from with the SL GUI (learn or in the preferences).
jlc
and my explanation to Aviavi-
basically here is how i set it up (without using Jack)-

(pause to boot up my session)

ok- i have three tracks in Ableton.

1 is a midi track titled Sooperlooper INput. The only thing on the track is the sooperlooper plugin. it leaves a space for an instrument you will not be adding. Make sure the Monitor is set to "In".

2 is an audio track that is set with the input as your guitar input with monitor selected to "In" and the output set to 2- Sooperlooper Input that we just made with the bottom specific to 3/4 Sooperlooper - not sure why i used 3/4 but i think it worked better.

3- is an audio track with the input set to 2- Sooperlooper Input and channels 3/4 of the Sooperlooper also with the Monitor set to "In". the output of this track is set to Master or wherever you want it to go (i personally have mine set to send only and then Bus A goes to output 3 of my audio interface so that the bass or guitar has a sep. output to my amp.

if this does or doesnt make sense or if you have any other questions please feel free to let me know.

best,

elijah

let the looping madness begin!

Hi
I followed your tips regarding sooperlooper and it works great but I've discovered that if put something before sooperlooper ( in this case Automat) you can have track 1/2 and 3/4
The problem( or maybe not) that Automat is gating the signal so you have to press a Midi note to ear the sound from the audio track ( all oscillator are set to off)
So press a note and press r on the keyboard with Sooperlopper window in focus and you record a phrase with send you can also have the dry signal to the master overlapping
MY question is is any device that behave like a midi instrument but let passing trough a audio signal from another track too a midi track ?
I tried with midi gater (Destroy FX) but it's not showing instead with automat you have this kind of choices to route signal from another track
1/2 Automat
3/4 sooperlooper
5/6 sooperlooper
7/8 sooperlooper

Note that if you want to use SL with and audio instrument you don't need a midi track. Just 1 audio track with the plugin and 1 midi track to send the commands to SL. That's all.
