hello there
i'm currently playing around with the demo version in the hope to use it as a live looper, building my tracks live loop after loop. i've spent the day trying
to figure out how i can make ableton recording only four bars (for example) and play it back immediately ......... without greater succes so far!
second one:
does anyone know a software for os x which does the same thing as 'bome's midi translator'? the one kid beyond uses in the atrist videos.
any suggestions greatly appreciated
x

#1 there are many ways to do what you want. You can automate the clip to record however many bars you want...and then once that time is up it will start playing. In pref's make sure 'select on launch' is on. You can trigger the clip to start recording...many people use a footpedal...but again, that's not necessary...search the forum for iac midi trigger...its an ingenious way to trigger clip without have to have a midi controller...albeit a bit more of an advanced concept...but once you get it...the possibilities are staggering. But...if you do use a midi foot controller...arm the track to record, trigger the clip...it will record until you trigger the clip again (based on your quantize setting)...and then immediately play back what you've recorded...you can then jam along.
#2 Control Aide or Midipipe for mac will work. I had problems getting control aide to work properly...but still use an app called 'midistroke' by the same guy...its good for assigning a midi control message to any key on your keyboard...particularly 'Delete'. I use this in tandem with Midipipe and it works beautifully...just what I want it to do.

in session view (the boxes)
set global quantise to 4 measures (top of the screen)
arm a track by hitting record
click a clip box to start it recording, the right after that click it again (not quite a double click)
after 4 measures the clip goes straight from record mode to playback mode.
the first click starts recording, the second stops recording, but beacause global quantise is set to 4 measures both clicks are quantised to 4 measures.
using bomes (google it, it's at the top of the search) you can do more voodoo with footswitches like delete a take, move to another clip, etc. check out the kid beyond video on the site to get the gist of it.
Live will absolutely do what you're asking.
