ableton's unfair copy protection system

I am about to purchase Live, but I as a Cubase user have been a bit concerned that Ableton might not release new unlock codes if I reinstall without an image or change hardware.

Changing hardware like soundcard or RAM won't alter the fingerprint of the system and therefor no new unlock is needed.
Reinstalling the operatingsystem after a HD crash or changing the CPU will alter the fingerprint of the computer and you need a new challenge-response to unlock.

This thread has convinced be that Ableton are a decent company, and that the copy protection is far, far less obtrusive than the dongle method.

The O/P should buy Cubase and see how he likes the dongle, he'll be able to reinstall every day of every year

A Steinberg dongle is not as reliable as an Ableton challange response.

you can easily reinstall your OS (in mac os x at least) without needing to re-authorize Live. its all in the user > library > application support > Live x.x folder.
if you need to ERASE your hard drive then just copy this folder and put it back there before you open Live.

hmm maybe the only point of this post was: "buy a mac". but that should work on windows too, doesnt it?

i knew my post was useless since i hadnt readen the other ones. someone said to keep the "unlock.cfg" file. thats it, copy it and re-use it. no problem as long as you're on the same computer i think.

I am actually finding the authorisation mechanism on ableton quite annoying. I have a laptop and another computer I have just built. I have gone for a dual boot configuration on my new machine for testing purposes with windows 7 and xp. Now I am finding that I can't authorise on the xp side of my machine as it is saying I have run out of authorisations. I know that ableton are very quick to give another autorisation; but today is sunday and I doubt anyone is there to check my mail. Now I have to download a 30 day trial and waste time. I know that the people that used patched versions of ableton off the net don't have to do anything. Seems like the honest people that pay good money for the product are suffering.

besides that.. isn't is so the 30 day trial enables you to save your sets? or was that the 14 days trial?
