Buying an external drive...

Post by The Thief » Fri Nov 03, 2006 6:11 am

Trying to get a feel on what ppl are using for both recording/live use...

Im getting an Ultralite shorty in which and my idea is to daisy chain an ext hard drive off it (thru firewire obvisouly) cause I'm short firewire ports on my lappy

anyone in the same boat? what do/dont you recommend, obviously faster rpm is better what about cache size and partitioning and so forth ??

Thanks

If i daisy chain an ext hard drive off the interface (bus powered or AC powered) will i need to AC power it or is it safe enough to run on bus power (FW400 that is) ??

any solutions, ideas, setups and help would be greatly appreciated

I'm daisy chaining my acamdata drive and my fw410 using bus power and it is working fine. the harddrive is using it's powersupply and the fw410 us running on bus.

does that help?

Im running an ultralite w/external drives all over the freakin place......works cool. You'll be ok,...just be sure to stick with an Oxford 911 chipset(for audio).
I've yet to have a prob. with those ext. case's.

Hi, I'm running a FW410 bus powered, and a LaCie external HD ac powered, they work perfectly (daisy chain).

hello.
i'm using a 12"powerbook, with an ultralite, with this:

7200rpm, 8mb cache, chain-buss powered.
been recording 8 24bit 48k tracks simultaneously, no problems at all.
i was concerned about heat at first, but it has been a non-issue.
they even make a raid version!:

that's a neat little feller, looks like the solid metal case is the heat sink, very nice

I got an external combo USB 2.0/FW case (colored LEDs and small fan built in) with wall-plug power supply from newegg on sale for around 35 bucks, and a Maxtor 200GB desktop-size HD on sale to put into it. I record onto it and render video onto it as well.
