Newbie Questions

Post by hqdeskflyer » Sun Sep 10, 2006 6:14 am

I just picked up a Behringer UMX25 - my first foray into MIDI. But I am having a heck of a time trying to get decent sounds within Ableton Live 4.1 (The version that came with the UMX) from the MIDI. The stuff it come with sounds pretty cheesy. What's the best way to get new MIDI instruments and sounds into Ableton? Do I have to download and install VSTs; I havent fully grasped what a VST is...like I said I am really new at this. 8O

Short answer:

Practice and read.

My secret weapon is, I try to have fun. If it's not, I move on.

A lot of people make cheesy stuff (me included), don't worry, keep going.

Good Luck,
Andy

Not sure exactly what you are doing, but you are probably playing Operator, which is Live's built-in soft-synth. Aside from that check out some of the tutorials on the Ableton site.

Hi,

This is my first post too. I am looking to purchase a UMX 25 keyboard too, together with a Behringer BCR 2000 B-control( Rotary). My other choice would be the M-Audio PCR M 30. But Im probably going to lean towards the combination of the Behringer products because of the value for money. Im relatively new to music production but already own Reason 3 and Cubase SX 3. I'm Currently saving upto purchase Live 6.

* I would like to get some opinions on the above midi controllers or any other in the market for a beginer like me.Preferably in the USD 75 - 220 range.

* The Behringer UMX 25 comes with Ableton Live lite 4 Behringer Edition. Am I able to save any of the tunes i create on that sotware or do i have to upgrade to a ful version?

* I know that there's a discounted price when upgrading to live6 I want to know if that price applies for the Behringer Live lite edition aswel?

Thankyou.
