Any PC/Mac with a dual core processor is a good place to start. although you'll need to check that your software supports dual core (most recently revised versions of the major DAWs do).

Next make sure your hard disk is big enough and fast enough for audio recording. I would suggest a minimum of 120GB hard disk at 7200RPM.

For RAM, you want to be looking at a minimum of 1GB, and to be honest the more RAM the better.

It's worth getting a PC/Mac with a designated graphics card as well (Radeon, Nvidia, etc) otherwise your processor will need to handle the graphics display which may cause a drain on your system, depending on what is being displayed on the screen at the time.

Stuff you can forget about when looking for a PC or Mac is bundled software (such as anti-virus, Office, games, etc). Also if it's gonna be a dedicated audio workstation, don't bother connecting it to the internet or installing games on it, otherwise before long it'll just start running slower and you put yourself at risk of getting viruses.

-Intel core 2. Even the slowest is sufficient.(but the E6600 = dual 2.4 Ghz has in my opinion the most bang for the bucks...--> Ableton performance test = 11%!!! Just amazing...)
-2 sata hard disks.
- At least 1 gig of ram.
-Asus motherboard. Not the cheapest. Check if the board is compatible with the quadcores (for the future)
-silent case. (important for recordings if your pc is in the same room. Not that expensive anyway.)

If you choose a pc, that is! A mac is ... but also ...

-Don't forget your audio interface! Good mic-preamps are really important if you're planning lots of mic recording...

Cheers.

if u asked this 5 years ago it would be the fastest system they had in those days so what I am saying is that proffesional recording can be done on pretty well anything..
Bruce springsteen did one of his albumns at home on a 4 track home tape recorder
Is this recording for you ? is it a commercial venture ? is it to support say a dozen players in a studio all playing at once? these are questions that it would be good for you to answer so people can give you a list of what suits your particular situation.
virtually any system will record audio fine.. but 48 tracks at once with 50 pluggins would require alot more horse power.
MacbookPro Core2Duo 17" 160 gb SATA 2gb ram.
Korg M3
1 Terabyte External Drive
Presonus Firebox
