How's Live performing on the G5?

Anyone already using it for Live? I haven't seen performance tests for the G5 yet at this board.

I'm testing out the Live demo on a G5. It seems really fast, but, I have nothing to compare it to.

Also, I'm having time-warp problems, but I don't believe that's related to the G5 architecture.

I ran the "demo session" file that comes with Live 3 on a dual 1.8 G5 with 8 reverb instances set to the "room" preset with absolutely no strain on the machine.

The CPU meter was hovering at 30%.

thanks. I am on Live 3.0.3 at the moment and they change the demo song. I presume you used the 3.0.1 version.

I runned a little test on my Sony Vaio Z1 laptop (centrino 1.5 gHz) using the demo arrangement of 3.0.3. I added 8 reverbs, using the room-preset. I saw at maximum 28% flashing.

I get the impression that Live is still running better on a PC than on a Mac at the moment.

compared to a DUAL G5 1.8?????!!!!!

a SINGLE 1.5gHz P4 m 2% less strained than DUAL G5 1.8 is pretty apalling if you ask me - I would even go so far as to say it takes the piss.

that can't be just down to altivec can it ?

well, maybe Live doesn't really support dual processors... I don't know.

although the G5 seems to be performing nicely with Live, the results are not like I expected them to to be based on some of the Logic tests I have read.

by the way, my Sony is not a P4, but a Centrino 1.5 gHz which can be compared more or less to a P4 running at 2.4 gHz. it's fantastic laptop, probably one of the best you can buy at the moment. I am using it with a RME Hammerfall.

From my understanding Live doesn't take advantage of multiple processors... so the only diff you're going to see is that some of the OS load gets placed on the G5's second processor and nothing else.

Now if you started loading up on VST effects/AU effects, that might be an entirely different story. Keep in mind though, that once you start using multiple processors you can actually see performance decrease in some cases because of too many cache misses. This can happen when a process keeps bouncing from CPU to CPU.

how much does a centrino laptop cost? What're the specs on your machine? OS?

the price I paid for it was 2500 euros. I have this model: Sony VAIO PCG-Z1SP (I have a 1.5 ghz Centrino while the new one has a 1.7 ghz Centrino). I think you should check out the new models too. I can recommend Centrino-cpu's since they are fast and don't need lots of power. My Sony is very quiet for example and the fan is off most of the time. This is perfect if you're recording with a condensor mic close to it, like I often do.
