If money is no object (and since you use a Mac like me, it shouldn't be), check out:

Alot of the laptops that don't use mobile processors have farily loud fans that come on almost immediately upon startup.

The link above looks like it might be a good way to avoid this, as they state they minimize the acoustical noise given off by the laptop, but as a general rule if you go with a laptop using a regular p4 or AMD processor see if you can "listen" to it first. Hopefully there won't be anything to be heard...

GO HERE!!

http://www.pctorque.com

They have amazing machines. They are actually made by the same manufacturer as the link above mine (made by sager/clevo). PCTorque is a better reseller in my opinion. Awesome customer service and awesome computers at great prices. You can customize your machine to make it a freakin beast too if you have the money. check it out

Hello,
I've just put together a machine for a friend of mine
ChemBook 2060 (Asus M6N)

1.6Mhz, 1 G RAM 60 GB 7200rpm HD 15.4" Screen

Works like a charm with Digi 002R, Reason, Ableton

Highly recomend . try to search for ASUS M6N - maybe you will find even better prices

Shhh...

I work at HP... but am a devout toshiba follower. I'm on my fourth Toshiba notebook and haven't had a bad experience yet.

The worst thing that happened was I dropped my laptop a few years back while the drive was on and it messed up the disk very badly. Toshiba was more than happy to replace it even though it was a month or two outside of my waranty.

I would still at least consider going with a more well known name. I know it isn't always true, but some of these companies do feel that they have a reputation to uphold, and it isn't always to screw the customer.

I can confirm that, my Toshiba runs 24/24 for 2 years now, I´ve burned over 500 CD`s with it and it rocks in use with Live and al sorts off other stuff and is always very quiet and has a brilliant display!
Before I´ve bought this one I worked on a Fujitsu-Siemens with a 2Gh Desktop P4 and it maked a LOT of noise, the display was compared to the toshiba´s like looking into a black hole!!!!!
Toshibas are not cheap, but you can feel the quality and the customer support is present on the whole world!
For running Live or tracktor you don´t need the fastest 3,6 desktop processor with HT, you go better with the new centrinos or a simple P4-m, spend your money on at least 512Mbram or more, get a 7200 bpm HD and beware not buying shared memory graphics!

Shared Memory Graphics

Post by Lucid » Tue Apr 27, 2004 6:36 pm

Hi SerotoninSteve, what is the issue with shared memory graphics relating to laptops and Ableton? Thanks, L

Avoid shared memory, you dont need a powerfull graphic card but it is important that it has its separate ram!
With shared memory you can have some problems running Live!
Look for a topic from a guy in this forum who bought a laptop with shared memory and Live did not work properly until its gui was minimized!
Everytime it has to process graphics it canot process something else, that slows down everything!

I now use a Fujitsu Lifebook and I have to say after having a toshiba and dell that it is hands down the best designed, most rugged, rock solid beast I have ever used seen anyone else use.

It has crashed on me once in 8 months... think about that for a second ...

check out http://notebookforums.com/
lots of good info there

also check this page http://www.powernotebooks.com/Name_Brand.php3
it has some nice general notebook manufacturer info in case you dont know yet. They also have a very good reputation with their own notebooks.

hey, i have the same problem - planning to get a toshiba notebook in the us for about $ 1000 - $1100.

i need it more or less only to use Live on stage, and i wonder if machnies
like toshiba satellite A45-S120/121/130 can handle this?

if not, what could be an alternative for the same money?

another problem is that in my country only the "top" companies
have their offices, so i would not fool around with brands i cannot
repair or upgrade here.

so the options would be hp/compaq/toshiba/fujitsu/dell/sony...

hope someone can advise!

I recently landed on a Sony Viao GRV616G for a good price and had the chance to try it out for a week before deciding. The nice, clear 16" screen is what attracted me most and it's worked out to be a very solid machine, no hassle whatsoever. Working with live at 1280x1024 and using the video output to drive a projector has been seemless, just using media player for some visuals. Expanded it to 768MB memory and an external firewire drive for recording/clips, I got some USB 2 cases for my old 40GB drives for extra storage/backupability which has also worked out well along with an inexpensive USB cardubs card. The P4 2.6Ghz @ 400Mhz bus is zippy enough for all I have thrown at it, the fan is almost always on but it's not an irritating whine for a change. The whole thing has been extremely solid and for the price overall has proved to be a bargain while using up some parts from my older desktop system. The MOTU 828 mk II has worked flawlessly with the setup, I reinstalled windows and XP had all drivers built in with no messing around.

Happy chappie.
