Best laptop for the job.

Hi,
I'm new to the board & thought i'd say hello.

I've been Dj'ing for many years & thought it about time I drag myself into the 21st cent & start experimenting with alberton live!

Can anyone recommend a reliable laptop.

I've heard, some have overheating probs in live situations.

Definitely get a dual-core laptop. A lot of people are going to say "buy a Mac," but I disagree.

If you already know XP well, stick with it. Don't use your new laptop for anything other than music and you will have no problems. (In other words, don't be a retard and get it infected full of spyware.)

It depends on how much money you have.

I saw a very nice AMD Turion x2 laptop with 2 gigs of ram and a 120 gig hard drive for like $1,200.

At this point in time, I think that Intel dual-cores are still overpriced, compared to AMD.

He might already be mostly familiar with OSX.

I'd say get a macbook and use it for everything. Always have it on you, have all your tunes on it and use it as your weapon of choice for every computing task you have.

Thats what I do with my powerbook and I love the whole thing.No worrying about viruses, trojans, any of that crap just using the computer as a tool (btw. vinyl dj of 13 years now using Live).

OK that's the PC and mac opinions no need for a war folks....

I just got a dv9000 series from HP's customized laptops.

2.0GHZ Dual core
2 gigs of SDRAM
100 gigs 7200RPM HD
256MB graphics card (not for gaming but to maintain windows and leave more RAM from the 2 gigs to be focused on LIVE)

1600 bones after taxes, its a pretty penny but this is just about the fastest thing on the market right now in terms "on the cusp."

There is a slew of internet features as well that I have to uninstall upon arrival, this baby is never gonna see the web.

I would avoid HP at all costs. I'm not anti-windows or anything, but HP is notorious for cutting corners in their laptops to keep costs down. I've heard so many horror stories about them I've lost count.

Plus, you could vigorously crank during the fast songs and the crowd would go nuts.

Yea all you did was mention what anyone could mention about any company. HP / Dell / Vaio / Compaq / Apple / Fujitsu / Toshiba etc etc

Every company, literally EVERY company has had people on this very board talk shit about. Also, the way technology is advancing at such a rapid rate , the differences between brands becomes more & more trivial.

If you know what you want to do, and you haven't had any problems in the past with a particular brand, then what's the harm? People get their balls in a vice over the subject but you have to understand that any computer made by ANYONE can fuck up. Do some research, understand what you need the laptop for / musical intentions and then just make the purchase.

There's only two crucial specs you need to consider for running Live, that's: 1) at least a gig of ram -and- 2) at least a 5400 rpm HD. The rest is all overkill with any of today's machines.

I am running Live6 on 1.5ghz IBM T40

unless you want to rewire into Logic or another DAW

i would agree with Anubis.
