Kontakt 2.1 in Ableton

Post by nagyember » Fri Sep 29, 2006 1:29 pm

Hi!

Tried to search for it, but couoldn't find anything relevant, so here it is:

I have Live 5.2.2. and Kontakt 2.1 installed, and a Oxygen 8 keyboard to play on. In arrangement view, I drag Kontakt to a MIDI track, set the MIDI in to USB Keystation, and everything works fine until I try to change the MIDI channel to other than 1. Whatever MIDI input I set (even all channels), it only works with channel 1.
(In Kontakt, I set e.g. the bass to MIDI channel 1, the kick to 2, and so on.)
I tried everything, and as far as I remember it was quite easy to achieve this in Cubase.
So how do I set up Kontakt (or Ableton?) to reach multiply MIDI channels from one Kontakt window?
I think I'm missing something obvious...

Thanks in advance

Just to be certain, are you changing the midi channel on the Oxygen 8? You need to do that.

I have it tried. And it doesnt work for me. Even if my controller is set to channel 2. It will play all the instruments in Kontakt. Even if all of these instruments are set to different channels. I have an Oxygen8v2 controller. Maybe you could give me a tip.

Hint : It works well in Cubase SX. But not in Live 5 and Logic Pro 7.

you don't need to change the channel on the oxygen 8.

here is what you do.

on kontakt, say you have an epiano, a bass, and a percussion

on the epiano go to the midi channel option and select PORT A (from host) > 1

then for the bass select PORT A (from host) 2 and for the percussion select PORT A (from host) 3

now in live you need to set up a new midi channel for each instrument, the midid channel you put kontakt on can be your first. set another empty midi channel next to it and on the midi to option select kontakts midid chanel and below that a box will appear, select which channel on kontakt you want it to go to. do the same for the thrird channel. then play away. i leave the monitor settings to auto.

Thanks D DAS, but i did EXACTLY what you explained but, i presume when i want to hear, for example, my percussion on channel PORT A (from Host) > 1 i have to clic on the record enable button (in red). Whatever i do, i hear ALL of the samples... I see it in Kontakt. I see the 3 midi icon are flashing at the same time...

the red button is the midi arm button and yes you need to click on it for the channel you want to play. you can arm all the channels by command clicking on the mac (not sure on PC, maybe control click) while you arm the other channels.

did that make sense?

let me know.

that is very strange. it should not be doing that, It looks like you have everything set up right. I am at work now so I can not check my mac, but if problem is not fixed when i get off i will check when i get home.

is there any way the oxygen 8 could be sending data to mulitple channels? but actually even that should not matter caus ethe host is wired properly. very odd.

where are the live geniuses when you need one, hoffman2k, machiante?

well i am not sure what is wrong with your set up. i mimicked yours and eveything is ok. when 1 track is armed, one instrument plays in kontakt.

i would hit up the ni forums and see what they say.

and just to be sure i tried it with two controllers, 1 an maudio trigger finger the other a korg microkontrol so i do not think it is your oxy 8.

sorry i couldn't help.

aloha

ugh i dug thru my kontakt dvd's and couldn't find your answer! i usually just assign my midi board to different key ranges meaning:

c0-c2 - drums
c2-c4 - strings

etc

etc

i'm pretty good w/ kontakt but after reading the posts i confused myself on the outputs and mine doesn't work either. i'll fix this and repost!

thanks anyway folks. I presume that my problem is related to the controller since all the Live "side" have been discussed. I am petty new to midi stuff and don't have a big knowledge of all midi specs. Maybe i did something wrong with the settings.
Thanks anyway.

PS. I don't know if it is helpful but this very problem occur only in Live but not in Cubase SX.

I tried to do this. In the Oxygen 8V2 this function is accomplished by pressing on the - and + data button togheter. But i didn't received any message telling me that it did. Even after, i tried and the problem is unsolved.
